A Research Guide To Southeastern Europe

This book seeks to aid scholars of all stripes in researching the nations, states, and peoples of the Balkan Peninsula in the Modern Age, presenting a single-source alternative to scholars for launching projects that span the humanities and social sciences.

In writings about travel, the Balkans appear most often as a place travelled to. Western accounts of the Balkans revel in the different and the exotic, the violent and the primitive − traits that serve (according to many commentators) as a foil to self-congratulatory definitions of the West as modern, progressive and rational. However, the Balkans have also long been travelled from. The region’s writers have given accounts of their travels in the West and elsewhere, saying something in the process about themselves and their place in the world. The analyses presented here, ranging from those of 16th-century Greek humanists to 19th-century Romanian reformers to 20th-century writers, socialists and ‘men-of-the-world’, suggest that travellers from the region have also created their own identities through their encounters with Europe. Consequently, this book challenges assumptions of Western discursive hegemony, while at the same time exploring Balkan ‘Occidentalisms’.

The studies and documents available in this field are of great interest to archivists, researchers, historians, and also to a wider audience. For many decades, the Holocaust in Eastern Europe lacked the required introspection, research and study, and most importantly the access to archives and documentation. Only in recent years and with the significant help of an emerging generation of local scholars, the Holocaust from this region became the focus of many studies.

Consisting of 12 chapters, the book presents the rise and development of environmentalism, environmental history as a discipline, and the history of environmental movements in the Central and South Eastern European region from an international point of view. The chapters—written by scholars from Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Slovakia, Romania, Serbia, Greece and Turkey—cover a wide range of topics including the creation of protected areas, increasing environmental consciousness, the evolution of humanity’s relationship toward the environment, and perceptions of environmentalism by different disciplines. This international approach highlights the region’s complex development from the end of the eighteenth century through the twentieth century, with its unique blend of traditions. Three historically different traditions—the Habsburg, Ottoman and Venetian—converge in Central and South Eastern Europe, and this book emphasizes the subtleties of these sometimes intertwined traditions. The focus of the book varies according to both the different geographical environments characteristic of the region and the protagonists who actively participated in changing relationships toward the environment. However, what does not vary and is common to all the chapters is the historical approach, since the process has continuity, which the book accentuates. In geographical terms, the region that is the focus of the book, Central and South Eastern Europe, is the contact zone of the Alps, Danube, Adriatic and partially the North Eastern Mediterranean Sea. Throughout history, it was also the contact zone of the Habsburg, Ottoman and Venetian traditions. Those realities have resulted in a unique blending and intertwining of traditions and, therefore, relationships with and perceptions of the environment.

Intended to aid librarians in small- and medium-sized libraries and media centers, this annotated bibliography lists 1,555 books focusing on the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. The book is divided into four parts: (1) "General and Interrelated Themes--Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics and Eastern European Countries"; (2) "Russian Empire Prior to 1917 and the USSR"; (3) "USSR--Non-Russian Republics, Jews, Other Peoples"; and (4) "Eastern European Countries." Each part is arranged by subject, with priority given to general studies, followed by special studies sections where appropriate. Titles in Part 1 focus on economics; government and law; political theory and communism; international relations; history; language and literature; dissent, nationalism, and religion; sociology and social conditions; and military affairs. Titles in Part 2 deal with anthropology and folklore; the arts, fine arts, and architecture; economics; education and culture; geography, demography, and population; government, state, and politics; diplomacy and foreign relations; history; military affairs; Russian language; Russian literature; philosophy and political theory; psychology and psychiatry; religion; science and research; and sociology.
