A Simplified Nursing Informatics

This book titled: A Simplified Nursing Informatics. A Modern Age Health Technology for Nurses and Midwives evolved from my revised, lecture notes on the same course I lecture with the School of Post Basic Nursing Programmes, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital Zaria, Kaduna State Nigeria. This book has been made to be very comprehensive with the sole aim of making informatics easy to comprehend by Nurses and Midwives, providing nurses and midwives with an overview and basic understanding of how informatics and information technology can be used to improve the delivery of quality patient care. This book discusses among others, the concept of Nursing Informatics, the Historical Antecedents of Nursing Informatics, the implementation of Technology in Healthcare, ways in which nurses can participate in in the implementation of New Technology, Telehealth, Telemedicine and Telenursing, the roles and responsibilities involved in Nursing Informatics, specialties of Nursing informatics and its educational pathways for certification. By embracing the benefit of informatics to modern age healthcare delivery, Nurses and other healthcare professionals can position themselves for better healthcare services and education.

This series is intended for the rapidly increasing number of health care professionals who have rudimentary knowledge and experience in health care computing and are seeking opportunities to expand their horizons. It does not attempt to compete with the primers already on the market. Nursing, like other health-related professions, is information-inten sive. The quality of care a patient receives is based on the soundness of judgment exercised by the health care team. Underlying sound judg ment is up-to-date information. Unless nurses have access to accurate and pertinent information, the care being rendered will not be of the highest standard. What is required is not necessarily more rapid and efficient informa tion services. Modern technology can process immense amounts of data in the blink of an eye. What we in the health professions need are information systems that are more intelligent, systems that can inte grate information from many sources, systems that analyze and syn thesize information and display it so that it may be applied directly in patient care-in other words, information that answers a question or even gives practical advice. In order to accomplish such objectives, work is needed to establish the scientific and theoretical basis for the use of computing and infor mation systems by health professionals. This is the research com ponent. In addition, there is the need for continued development and evaluation of practical information systems.

Textbook in Health Informatics covers subjects addressed in the overall field of Health Informatics. A number of issues particular to nursing will also be reviewed. It will give its reader an overview of Health Informatics, starting with an introduction to Health Care. In this introduction 'Classification and Management in Nursing Information Technology' is discussed, as is the Nursing Minimum Data Set. The introduction also deals with Health Concepts, an Introduction to Nursing Science and The International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP). Textbook of Health Informatics continues with an Information Technology Aspects section. In this section important aspects of Health Informatics and Hospital Information Systems are discussed, like Data Protection and Confidentiality, Telecare Service for Nurses, Data Analysis Methods and Classification Methods. The Fourth International "Nursing Informatics '91" Preconference sessions held in Melbourne Australia on the 12th and 13th April 1991 hosted by the Nursing Computer Group, Victoria Inc. (N.C.G.V.) and I.M.I.A. Working Group 8. The aims of both the International Committee and the N.C.G.V.are to provide our Nursing Colleagues nationally and internationally with access to a wide range of information about computers awareness literacy ,and, the sharing of experiences. As technology advances and nurses understand their particular practice setting needs, progress in the area of nursing informatics will be an expanding arena for Industry and knowledge. Papers such as those presented here will contribute greatly to the dissemination of todays knowledge base and hopefully assist in our expansion as we move toward the year 2000. The vision and subsequent motivation of hosting an International Informatics Meeting is that a few very dedicated nurses can encourage their colleagues to approach this newly defined specialty with openness and enthusiasm.
