From bestselling author Jessica Day George comes a rich new fantasy, based on a Norwegian fairy tale, set in a land of eternal winter. Blessed--or cursed--with an ability to understand animals, the Lass (as she's known to her family) has always been seen as strange. And when an isbjorn (polar bear) seeks her out, and promises that her family will become rich if only the Lass will accompany him to his castle, she doesn't hesitate. But the bear is not what he seems, nor is his castle, which is made of ice and inhabited by a silent staff of servants. Only a grueling journey on the backs of the four winds will reveal the truth: the bear is really a prince who's been enchanted by a troll queen, and the Lass must come up with a way to free him before he's forced to marry a troll princess. On August 26, 1835, a fledgling newspaper called theSunbrought to New York the first accounts of remarkable lunar discoveries. A series of six articles reported the existence of life on the moon—including unicorns, beavers that walked on their hind legs, and four-foot-tall flying man-bats. In a matter of weeks it was the most broadly circulated newspaper story of the era, and theSun, a working-class upstart, became the most widely read paper in the world. An exhilarating narrative history of a divided city on the cusp of greatness, and tale of a crew of writers, editors, and charlatans who stumbled on a new kind of journalism,The Sun and the Moontells the surprisingly true story of the penny papers that made America a nation of newspaper readers.

“Redolent of folklore . . . A sweet morality tale of cosmic misadventures and sibling rivalry” by the author of The Cloud Princess (Kirkus Reviews). The Sun and the Moon are sisters, and they rule and sky together peacefully. One day, however, each begins to wonder: who is more important? This friction leads them to make a powerful decision to switch roles, hoping that it will lead to a greater understanding of their powers. Soon, the Sun begins shining all through the night, and the Moon brings night to the day. In the end, the two sisters will learn an important lesson about the importance of harmony and the balance of their relationship. “This wonderful picture book evokes a sense of harmony through pictures and words inspired by a blend of modern and traditional Asian artwork and folklore. Earth tones juxtaposed with bursts of color in mixed media and watercolor create vibrant imagery that thoughtfully reflects nature and honors the spirit of multiculturalism . . . Audiences young and old will admire this wise and magical tale, whether it’s read aloud in a group or shared one-on-one at bedtime.” —School Library Journal “It is the illustrations that stand out, their jewel tones, elegant lines, and complex textures managing to look simultaneously contemporary and timeless.” —Kirkus Reviews

‘East of the Sun and West of the Moon’ is a collection of Nordic and Norwegian folklore, edited and collated by Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Engebretsen Moe. The two men were so closely united in their lives’ work that their folk tale anthologies are commonly mentioned only as ‘Asbjørnsen and Moe.’ This volume contains the classic ‘East of the Sun and West of the Moon’ and ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’, alongside other lesser-known stories such as ‘The Three Princesses of Whiteland’, ‘The Widow’s Son’, and ‘The Cat on the Dovrefell’. The stories of ‘East of the Sun and West of the Moon’ are accompanied by the dazzling colour and black and white illustrations of Kay Nielsen (1886 – 1957). Nielsen was a Danish artist belonging to the golden age of illustration. He was influenced by Japanese art and the Swedish folklore – becoming a crucial participant in the Art Nouveaux movement. His art is characterised by long, swooping lines, open spaces and a certain macabre, yet ephemeral quality. Presented alongside the text, his illustrations further refine and elucidate the Asbjørnsen and Moe’s masterful storytelling. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.
