Accepting My Place

These are my first set of journals, written mostly from 2011 to 2014. Experimental and overtly pensative in nature, these collections of thought experiments, fledgling essays, and prose poems reveal the workings of a global thinker in development.

Trapped: An Invasion by a Human Predator invites its readers to take an inside view of a forgotten crime. The plot depicts the life of a twelve-year-old girl, which struggles to survive the aftermath of a brutal kidnapping, rape, and attempted murder. The atrocity took place in early 1976, in East Saint Louis, Illinois. In addition, the book cover was carefully chosen to engage the readers to experience the torment of how I felt during this period of my life. Indeed, life was blue as the blue book cover, which shields the narration. In fact, my life was darker than the imagination could probably travel.

With over twenty years of experience in obstetrics, Dr. Monique Rainford offers a primer on how to better care for Black pregnancies. Passionately identifying why Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy than their white counterparts, this book carries the hopes and dreams of a generation looking to effect change.

The last sixteen years of James Baldwin's life (1971–87) unfolded in a village in the South of France, in a sprawling house nicknamed “Chez Baldwin.” In Me and My House Magdalena J. Zaborowska employs Baldwin’s home space as a lens through which to expand his biography and explore the politics and poetics of blackness, queerness, and domesticity in his complex and underappreciated later works. Zaborowska shows how the themes of dwelling and black queer male sexuality in The Welcome Table, Just above My Head, and If Beale Street Could Talk directly stem from Chez Baldwin's influence on the writer. The house was partially torn down in 2014. Accessible, heavily illustrated, and drawing on interviews with Baldwin's friends and lovers, unpublished letters, and manuscripts, Me and My House offers new insights into Baldwin's life, writing, and relationships, making it essential reading for all students, scholars, and fans of Baldwin.
