The purpose of medical education is to benefit patients by improving the work of doctors. While telemedicine was not a new concept before the COVID-19 pandemic, it has certainly helped to propel telehealth as a popular solution and tool for patients to continue to use well after the impacts of COVID-19 have been felt. However, telehealth also provided solutions for health institutions faced with the challenge of preparing the next generation of medical professionals remotely. Telemedicine allowed medical educators to accompany students in their first encounters with patients and to simulate practical scenarios. The Ottawa conferences, which are well known in the field of medical education, are interesting to both researchers and teachers because of the quality of the papers presented. This book gives an overview of the most recent advances in medical education in more than 20 countries. Such themes as continuing medical education, faculty development, information technology, standardized patients, and innovations in assessment are among those highlighted. Name and subject indexes are provided for quick and easy reference.

About 550 registrants from 51 different countries attended the Seventh Ottawa Conference on Medical Education and Assessment in Maastricht. We received 525 abstracts for the conference, divided in thematic poster sessions and platform presentations. Organising the conference was an honour and we tried to meet the high standards of a friendly and relaxed atmosphere which has characterized previous Ottawa conferences. During and after the conference about 250 papers were submitted for publication in the conference proceedings, leaving us little time for a post-conference depression. Despite the large number of papers, the editors have attempted to review and edit the papers as care fully as possible. Occasionally, however, correspondence exceeded reasonable deadlines, preventing careful editing of a small number of the papers. Although we felt that our editorial task was not quite finished, we nevertheless decided to include these papers. We thank the many authors for their enthusiastic and prompt response to - occasionally tedious - editorial suggestions and requests. We are sure that this collective effort has resulted in a book that will make an important contribution to the field of medical education. The editors want to thank Jocelyn Flippo-Berger whose expertise with desk top publishing and perseverance was a great help.

As the general public has become more aware of advances in nutrition, consumer demands for advice on matters of diet and disease have grown. This book offers recommendations to upgrade what were found to be largely inadequate nutrition programs in U.S. medical schools in order that health professionals be better qualified to advise and treat their patients. A comprehensive study of one-third of American 4-year undergraduate medical schools provided information on the current status of nutrition programs at each school. Conclusions were drawn and recommendations made from analysis of this gathered information. Questions examined in this volume include: Has medical education kept pace with advances in nutrition science? Are medical students equipped to convey sound nutritional advice to their patients? What strategies are needed to initiate and sustain adequate teaching of nutrition in medical schools?
