"This book explores how the business of play and the development of modern intellectual property evolved together, and alongside concerns about children's consumption becoming a legitimate source of revenue and profit. Or, in other words, how that industry and children's special attachment to it gradually emerged. In so doing, it considers the paradox in the relationship between the growth of intellectual property and the presumed innocence of childhood that initially underpinned controversies about the construction of the child as a consumer. As is apparent throughout the book, our main argument is neither moralistic nor regulatory. Rather, our concern is to explore how, since the late nineteenth and through to the twentieth century, attempts to come to terms with this paradox were embedded in many issues and contexts. In tracing those entangled relationships, we think it is possible to see how modern authorship, entrepreneurship and even the child as a consumer, all came into simultaneous existence through a process of the mutual conferring of reality"--

Adventures in Risky Play is Rusty Keeler at his finest. Congenial and provocative, Rusty invites readers to new insight and action as they relate to children at play. When adults increase their tolerance for children's risk-taking, play becomes what it is meant to be - an expression of freedom, exploration, creativity and growth. Navigating risk is a crucial life skill, this book calls on parents and educators to allow, support and celebrate risk, in play.Fun is guaranteed as Rusty takes you on a tour of wild places -- schools, community playgrounds, education centers, forests. From engagement with mud, fire and water to developed anarchy zones and adventure playgrounds in the US and around the world - Rusty celebrates play and makes a compelling argument for adults to step back and let go a little (or a lot), so children can come to understand themselves - and world around them - through the sheer joy of play.

Adventures in Childhood connects modern intellectual property law and practice with a history of consumption. Structured in a loosely chronological order, the book begins with the creation of a children's literature market, a Christmas market, and moves through character merchandising, syndicated newspaper strips, film, television, and cross-industry relations, finishing in the 1970s, by which time professional identities and legal practices had stabilized. By focusing on the rise of child-targeted commercial activities, the book is able to reflect on how and why intellectual property rights became a defining feature of 20th century culture. Chapters trace the commercial empires that grew around Alice in Wonderland, Peter Rabbit, Meccano, Felix the Cat, Mickey Mouse, Peter Pan, Eagle Magazine, Davy Crockett, Mr Men, Dr Who, The Magic Roundabout and The Wombles to show how modern intellectual property merchandising was plagued with legal and moral questions that exposed the tension between exploitation and innocence.

When David Sobel’s children were toddlers, he set out to integrate a wide range of nature experiences into their family life, play, and storytelling. Blending his passion as a parent with his professional expertise, he created adventures tailored to their developmental stages: cultivating empathy with animals in early childhood, exploring the woods in middle childhood, and devising rites of passage in adolescence. This book is Sobel’s vivid and moving memoir of their journey and an inspiring guide for other parents who seek to help their children bond with the natural world. As we share this family's experiences, we observe how wild play in nature hones a sense of wonder, provides healthy challenges, and nurtures Earth stewardship-and we share Sobel’s joy as his children, Eli and Tara, grow into earthbound, grounded young adults. Richard Louv’sLast Child in the Woodsidentified the urgent problem of “nature deficit” in today’s children, sounding the alarm for parents, educators, and policy makers.Wild Playis a hopeful response, offering families myriad ways to blaze their own trails; it should become another classic in this field.
