Africa Calls

Volume 29 records the story of the RCA's first fifty years of mission in sub-Saharan Africa, told through the eyes of a missionary who has worked for half a century in this difficult region of the world. A fascinating account of the church's work in a foreign land, this volume also includes twenty-seven illustrations and six maps of the sub-Sahara.

Last Call for the African-American Church revisits the commandment Jesus left his followers to proclaim the gospel worldwide until his return, one that by all accounts is no longer a priority in the contemporary African-American church. Despite the presence of euphoric praise-and-worship celebrations and the proliferation of diverse ministries it advertises as “cutting edge,” the implosion of missions has occurred in this church's pulpits and pews. Selected biblical foundations of missions are provided for those new to the parlance, and for others needing a refresher course. Along with conventional missions’ distinctions, Chester Williams logs some concepts in the glossary he himself has constructed, for readers and for collegial review. They include the feminization of missions, rummage sale missions, missions without Jesus, and window dressing missions. For the most part, these concepts represent a radical departure from apostolic missions and are viewed as biblical tinkering and convolution, most importantly, as obstructions to the Great Commission—world harvesting.

This book shows the applicability of Thomas Kuhn's theory of the structure of scientific revolutions to the struggle for social change in southern Africa. The components of this theory which seem applicable to the conflict and the struggle for fundamental social change in this troubled region of Africa are: definition of paradigms, their functions, the elements of paradigm shifts and their effect, the relationship between paradigm shift in natural and social science, and the concept of anomaly. This study utilizes the components of this theory to discuss why the problems of southern Africa seem to defy this solution.

With 342 years of colonialism and apartheid in South Africa, a book of this calibre is essential to contribute to scholarly debates on the decolonisation of the media. After the democratic dispensation in 1994, there was a narrow pursuit of transformation and media freedom while neglecting decolonisation, patriarchal tendencies and the plight of black women journalists who are often vilified while discharging their duties. It was two decades after democracy that the #RhodesMustFall movement which later evolved into #FeesMustFall movement reignited debates on decoloniality in the academia. Moreover, the book is published during the second wave of #FeesMustFall student protests and the demand for decolonised free education is inevitable as no permanent solution to student funding crisis was crafted. In the same vein, the book advocates for decolonised pedagogy in universities, including journalism curriculum. That ownership of the media is still skewed towards white and with only few black companies gradually joining the industry also brings into doubt media freedom, editorial independence, ethics and integrity among media practitioners. Therefore, the decoloniality movement seeks to confront these structural challenges head-on via dialogue to ensure the integrity of the journalism profession. Decolonising journalism in South Africa is published at a time in which journalism serves a watchdog and a critique of a democratic government and needs to follow a bottom-up social justice approach and become a voice to the voiceless. Therefore, this book seeks to revolutionise the media in a way that even the language of reporting of certain issues needs to be changed to a balanced kind of reporting characterised by principles of no fear or favour.
