African Women Pan Africanism And African Renaissance

This volume explores what it means to be an African in a political context in which such people are called upon to re-assert the value of identifying as African in order to counter the effects of neo-colonialism. This includes affirming visions of what Africanness can offer in terms of people’s being-in-the-world. The book also discusses the benefits associated with working together as people of African ancestry, as well as the evocation of Ubuntu. It focuses on the possibility of revisiting the urge for African rebirth, and shows how the idea of Pan-Africanism helps to keep this dream alive. It engages with a range of ideas that build on the Pan-African philosophy for grounding African cultural and political rebirth, and will contribute to debunking the mindset that prompts many African youths and adults to risk it all for an apparently better life on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.

This Book is the outcome of a long project begun thirty years ago. It is a book on the makings of pan-Africanism through the predicaments of being black in a world dominated by being white. The book is a tribute and celebration of the efforts of the African-American and African-Caribbean Diaspora who took the initiative and the audacity to fight and liberate themselves from the shackles of slavery. It is also a celebration of those Africans who in their own way carried the torch of inspiration and resilience to save and reconstruct the Free Humanism of Africa. As a story of the rise from the shackles of slavery and poverty to the summit of Victors of their Renaissance Identity and Self-Determination as a People, the book is the story of African refusal to celebrate victimhood. The book also situates women as central actors in the Pan-African project, which is often presented as an exclusively masculine endeavour. It introduces a balanced gender approach and diagnosis of the Women actors of Pan-Africanism which was very much lacking. The problem of balkanisation of Africa on post-colonial affiliations and colonial linguistic lines has taken its toll on Africas building of its common identity and personality. The result is that Africans are more remote to each other in their pigeon-hole-nation-states which put more restrictions for African inter-mobility, coupled by education and cultural affiliations, the communication and transportation and trading networks which are still tied more to their colonial masters than among themselves. This book looks into the problem of the new wave of Pan-Africanism and what strategies that can be proposed for a more participatory Pan-Africanism inspired by the everyday realities of African masses at home and in the diaspora. This book is the first book of its kind that gives a comprehensive and multidimensional coverage of Pan-Africanism. It is a very timely and vital compendium.

This book looks at the first ten years of the African Union. This is the second in a series of books that will be produced each year from annual conferences held on the multi-faceted issue of African liberation. The key themes of the book explore ways of improving the effectiveness of the African Union, fostering unity amongst African countries through entrenchment of pan-Africanism, and building ownership of the African Union by the African people and their communities. In addition, the thoughts of key figures of pan-Africanism and black emancipation, such as Sylvester Williams and Franz Fanon, are re-positioned to even greater contemporary relevance. Through its promotion of Ethiopianism, pan-Africanism and the African renaissance, we trust that this book will add new interest and a fresh perspective to how Africans move forward together into a post-colonial era where policies and actions are determined by the united agency of liberated Africans the world over.

A substantial work on the question of unity of African states, containing essays from twenty-four scholars from universities throughout Africa. The papers revolve around four main subjects. The first examines the colonial origins of the African state, neo-colonial constraints on post-colonial regimes, and the nature of the post-colonial political elite. The second subject under discussion is regional integration as a vehicle for the realisation of the African Union. Dani Wadaba Nabudere contributes an overview chapter on African unity in historical perspective; and many contributors consider the complicating phenomenon of globalisation alongside regional integration. The next part examines the extent to which problems of peace and security impact upon the integration project; and the effectiveness of existing regional and continental conflict prevention and resolution mechanisms. Xavier Renou analyses the present roles of France and America on the continent as an obstacle to peace and unity in a chapter entitled 'The New Franco-American Cold-War'.
