This volume, by graduate researchers working in urban agriculture, examines concrete strategies to integrate city farming into the urban landscape. Drawing on original field work in cities across the rapidly urbanizing global south, the book examines the contribution of urban agriculture and city farming to livelihoods and food security. Case studies cover food production diversification for robust and secure food provision; the socio-economic and agronomic aspects of urban composting; urban agriculture as a viable livelihood strategy; strategies for integrating city farming into urban landscapes; and the complex social-ecological networks of urban agriculture. Other case studies look at public health aspects including the impact of pesticides, micro-biological risks, pollution and water contamination on food production and people. Ultimately the book calls on city farmers, politicians, environmentalists and regulatory bodies to work together to improve the long term sustainability of urban farming as a major, secure source of food and employment for urban populations. Agriculture, Food and Food Security: Some Global Perspectives is an edited collection of scholarly work. The book looks at agriculture and food in a framework of enhancing food security. The seven chapters that comprise the volume are written by successful international scholars with sterling academic publication records. The authors live and work in countries across the world including Jamaica, Germany, Canada, and the United States. Together, they have conducted numerous research projects and published a high volume of scholarly articles on issues related to the central themes of this book: agriculture, food and food security. The chapters in the book provide insights into several key themes centered on food, agriculture, and food and nutrition security. The volume explores some pressing issues including food desserts, micro-nutrient deficiencies, increasing food production by tapping into the potential of already known species, localising food production, maximizing the food and nutrition potential of tropical fruits, and agricultural vulnerability in the context of the most pressing global threats: climate change and variability.

Today, mainstream agriculture pushes excess food while depleting soil, water, air, and energy instead of growing just enough for adequate, healthy consumption.

Canadians are failing to balance reasonable food consumption with sufficient and sustainable production. The modern agricultural system is producing more and more food. Too much food. The cost is enormous: excess nutrients are contaminating the air and water; soil is being depleted; species loss is plunging us toward the sixth extinction; and farmers, racking up debt, are increasingly vulnerable to economic and climatic shifts. At the same time, people are consuming too much food. Two-thirds of health-care costs in Canada can be attributed to chronic diseases associated with unhealthy eating. And then there is the waste — householders, food processors, distributors, wholesalers, and retailers collectively waste 40 percent of the food produced. A radical rethink is required. We need to move from excess to enough.

This book offers critical insights by international scholars, with chapters on global food security, supermarket power, new technologies, and sustainability. The book also assesses the contributions of diet and nutrition research in building socially just and environmentally sustainable food systems and provides policy recommendations to improve the health and environmental status of contemporary agri-food systems.
