This report is part of a series of country profiles that describe: (i) policy measures enacted by the government of South Sudan to contain the spread of the virus; (ii) policies and measures to stabilize the functioning of agri-food systems; (iii) potential effects of policies on agri-food systems and vulnerable groups. Finally, the profiles also assess longer-term options for agri-food system policies and investments to make them more resilient.

Finally, the profile also assesses longer-term options for agri-food system policies and investments in Ethiopia so as to make them more resilient.

The report provides a comprehensive, cross-country analysis of the impact of COVID-19 on agrifood systems in 15 countries and territories experiencing food crisis. The cross-country analysis is based on individual country profiles and findings that are generally valid across the countries. Each country profile describes the policy measures enacted by governments, development and humanitarian partners to contain the virus, including measures taken to protect the functioning of agri-food systems from major disruptions. The profiles assess the effects of such measures on agrifood systems and vulnerable groups, including long-term implications and the investments necessary to make agrifood systems more resilient in future. The report is structured around key messages and findings that are generally valid across the profiles. Examples are used to illustrate some of the policy measures, their impacts and lessons learned.

This paper provides insights and evidence on how the COVID-19 pandemic and related policy responses to curb its spread influence the risk of child labour in agriculture through different pathways. It draws on case studies from seven countries covering different production systems: Côte d’Ivoire (cocoa), Ethiopia (cattle keeping and farming), (Lebanon (horticulture and greenhouse farms), the Philippines (municipal fisheries), and Viet Nam (crop farming, livestock, and citrus fruit chains). Based on these evidence, the document provides concluding reflections and recommendations on priority areas regarding knowledge generation and data collection, policy responses (social protection, education), and household- and community-level responses.

Governments worldwide are implementing an extensive range of prevention and mitigation measures to control the spread of COVID-19 and limit its health, economic and social consequences. COVID-19 policy actions could have significant negative impacts across the food system, mainly if the policies are uncoordinated and built on limited evidence. In Jordan, the COVID-19 pandemic is continuing to cause direct harm to health, livelihoods, to people living standard and overall national economies. This articulates the importance of formulating long, medium and short-term policies to deal with pandemic priorities and alleviate COVID-19 and increase development investments in the agriculture sector as one of the most critical sectors in such these conditions. This study determines the short-term impact of COVID-19 on agriculture and food supply and identifies the positive impact of government measures taken across the country of Jordan. This rapid assessment utilized primary data and existing data related to the agriculture-food systems sector to understand the impact of the COVID-19 crisis and produced recommendations and policy actions. The assessment's general objective is to identify the effects of COVID-19 on Agri-food systems actors and recommend policies to alleviate the negative impact. It explores the range of policies, strategies and actions, in the short- and medium/long-term in the broader agriculture/food systems sector. This report describes the impact of COVID-19 on the agrifood sector and rural populations of the Western Balkans in 2020, both at individual country/ territory level and for the region as a whole, and the government measures and initiatives that were adopted in response. Based on its findings, the report offers a set of policy recommendations for addressing the current crisis and building back better from the pandemic. The report is based on research carried out by the Regional Rural Development Standing Working Group (SWG) in Southeastern Europe, supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

But lessons from the world’s response to the pandemic can help address future shocks and contribute to food system change. In the 2021 Global Food Policy Report, IFPRI researchers and other food policy experts explore the impacts of the pandemic and government policy responses, particularly for the poor and disadvantaged, and consider what this means for transforming our food systems to be healthy, resilient, efficient, sustainable, and inclusive.
