Aim2 Advanced Flight Testing Workshop

The aim of this book is to briefly present modern optical measurement techniques to measure the thermal and flow parameters in-flight. Furthermore, advanced optical methods to measure the deformation of the surface of wings and rotor blades of aircraft will be presented. Readers will gain knowledge as a result of research conducted in the framework of the two European projects AIM and AIM2 and verified during the flight test on various types of aircraft. These have included the Evektor VUT100, Airbus A380, Dornier 228, Fairchild Metro II, Janus, PW-6, Piaggio P180 and Scottish Aviation Bulldog.

This book presents contributions to the 19th biannual symposium of the German Aerospace Aerodynamics Association (STAB) and the German Society for Aeronautics and Astronautics (DGLR). The individual chapters reflect ongoing research conducted by the STAB members in the field of numerical and experimental fluid mechanics and aerodynamics, mainly for (but not limited to) aerospace applications, and cover both nationally and EC-funded projects. Special emphasis is given to collaborative research projects conducted by German scientists and engineers from universities, research-establishments and industries. By addressing a number of cutting-edge applications, together with the relevant physical and mathematics fundamentals, the book provides readers with a comprehensive overview of the current research work in the field. Though the book’s primary emphasis is on the aerospace context, it also addresses further important applications, e.g. in ground transportation and energy.

For the second time the European Telemetry and Test Conference – etc2016 took place from 10 – 12 May 2016 in Nuremberg (Germany), in collaboration with the SENSOR+TEST 2016. Worldwide, there is no comparable platform to SENSOR+TEST / etc that offers such an intensive innovation dialog between suppliers of sensors, measuring and testing technology and users from all major industries. This cooperation provides in addition etc2016 exhibitors the opportunity to meet international customers from industry, science and research – from automotive industries, machinery constructions, electrical and energy industry, and of course aviation and space. The etc2016 spotlights the most recent innovations in methods, systems, and instrumentation from industry, researchers and laboratories all around the world. The European Telemetry and Test Conference offers original technical papers and innovation ideas in Test, Telemetry, Telecontrol, Instrumentation and Recording technologies for industrial, automotive, scientific, aerospace, space, naval and military applications.

The European Telemetry and Test Conference etc2014 took place in Nuremberg in June 2nd-5th, 2014. Over 50 Technical Papers were presented in 10 Technical Sessions, highlighting the most recent innovations in methods, systems, and instrumentation from industry, researchers and laboratories all around the world. More than 50 companies attended the etc2014 exhibition and offered unique opportunities for technical discussions. Within the etc-Village, they presented numerous innovations, among others around new sensors and data acquisition architectures, Ethernet video solutions, C-band telemetry. This international success has been confirmed by the feedback of the participants: more than 85% were satisfied about the information offered in the Technical Sessions and the etc2014 Exhibition, the organisation and the location of the Conference. Organised for the first time in cooperation with SENSOR + TEST, the internationally leading trade fair for sensors, measuring, and testing technology, the new form of etc2014 opened the door to further 500+ exhibitors; potentially interesting for the daily and future applications of the telemetry professionals.

The book presents a synopsis of the main results achieved during the 3 year EU-project "Advanced Inflight Measurement Techniques (AIM)" which applied advanced image based measurement techniques to industrial flight testing. The book is intended to be not only an overview on the AIM activities but also a guide on the application of advanced optical measurement techniques for future flight testing. Furthermore it is a useful guide for engineers in the field of experimental methods and flight testing who face the challenge of a future requirement for the development of highly accurate non-intrusive in-flight measurement techniques.
