Centered on his intriguing synthesis of the American republic's architectural and democratic traditions, Allan Greenberg's essay moves across geography and through history as the renowned architect and scholar makes the case that America's architectural tradition and political ideals are deeply connected. At the core of the American democratic architectural tradition is the modest, single-family house, which gave rise to the statehouse, the courthouse, the firehouse, the schoolhouse, the jailhouse, and the President's house (as it was known before it became the White House).Generously illustrated and skillfully written, Architecture of Democracy traces a common line from the earliest colonial settlements to the Western frontier of the nineteenth century and today's ultramodern city centers. The volume will imbue in its readers a newfound appreciation for the democratic ideals that American architecture strives to express and uphold.

In the exclusionary world of high modern architecture, it is curious to discover that two icons of the movement both admired the work of Sir Edwin Lutyens - an architect who had little or no interest in modernism. Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright created buildings that are very different, and the two men did not even like each other, but they shared a fascination for Lutyens' distinctively non-international style architecture. This polemical text is an account of why this occured. By exposing common aesthetic and structural themes in the architecture of these three giants, including the cities of New Delhi and Chandigahr, in India, the author explains why Wright and Le Corbusier may have had more in common with Lutyens than with many of their modern peers. The primary text in the book was written in 1967 and was published in a student journal in the U.S. with a small circulation. It has remained an underground classic since then - perhaps because its contents are so disruptive of our current views of 20th century modernism.

When he assumed the position of Chairman of the Board of Bear Stearns in 1978, Alan C. Greenberg found himself with the unenviable task of meeting —and surpassing —the rigorous leadership standards set by his legendary predecessor, Cy Lewis, "the man who was credited with having made Bear Stearns what it then was." For nearly two decades now, "Ace" Greenberg, as he is affectionately known, has kept Bear Stearns on top through a unique and provocative business management philosophy —a philosophy that he frequently and effectively communicates to employees through a series of no-holds-barred company memos. Now, the inimitable Greenberg style sparks a priceless collection of his most inspirational, insightful, and instructional memoranda. Memos From the Chairman affords a rare glimpse at the motivational thoughts and management techniques of one of the corporate world's most brilliant leaders. "Many years ago, Where Are the Customers' Yachts?, through a humorous look at Wall Street, dispensed some of the best investment advice ever written. In this book, Ace has applied the same treatment to managerial advice with equal success." —Warren Buffett from the Foreword to Memos From the Chairman "I love this book. If I didn't have a dreaded MBA, I might even, at age 53, apply for a job at Bear Stearns." —Tom Peters

A comprehensive overview of current trends in classicist and vernacular architecture. This book presents 130 projects that reconsider what it means to practice as a traditional architect in the twenty-first century, including a substantial body of work from non-Western countries as well as work by contemporary masters of classical design such as Robert A. M. Stern, Allan Greenberg, Andrés Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, and Quinlan and Francis Terry. The projects assembled here highlight the awareness of a sustainable localism and the continuity of traditional building crafts on a global scale and reveal the resilience and originality of traditional building cultures despite the enormous economic and cultural pressures of contemporary development. This is an optimistic vision of a new breed of traditional architects who endeavor to enrich the future while honoring the past.
