Alvar Aalto Designer

Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) is the most prestigious Finnish architect of the last century, and the father of Nordic Modernism. He once said, God created paper for the purpose of drawing architecture on it. Everything else is at least for me an abuse of paper. In the U.S. Aalto's critical reception began with his design for the Finnish Pavilion at the 1939 World Fair in New York: Frank Lloyd Wright described it as a work of genius. After World War II, Aalto also designed MIT's student dormitory. Prior to this, the architect's Paimio Sanatorium (1929) and Viipuri Library (1935), both in Finland, had already attracted international praise. He was also an outstanding town planner, painter and sculptor. Aalto's Modernism entailed the use of natural materials, warm colors, and undulating lines, and he is considered an important early exponent of Organic Design as a result. Of his design work outside of architecture, Aalto's vases, lamps, glassware and laminated bent-plywood furniture (pioneered and produced through the design company he co-founded, Artek) are equally esteemed. Iconic pieces include the Savoy Vase, the Paimio Chair and the Beehive Lamp. This monograph on Aalto's highly collectible furniture designs expands our understanding of the diverse abilities of this influential architect/designer.

Alvar Aalto was remarkably inventive in architecture and industrial design. Moreover, his command of technology was integrated with a humanistic style of building, and like Saarinen and Frank Lloyd Wright he sought an organic synthesis of his structures with their surroundings. Aalto's success in approaching these ideals may account for the extraordinary spread of his influence on an international scale. In this broad study of Aalto's work, Malcolm Quantrill assesses its development in terms of two powerful sources-the Finnish National Romantic movement and the Modern movement in architecture. His critique of Aalto's most significant buildings and furniture designs is complemented by photographs of many stages of their creation, from the spontaneity of initial sketches to the completed detail. Professor Quantrill first met Alvar and Elissa Aalto at Muuratsalo in June 1953, and he has been studying and photographing Aalto's buildings ever since. His book provides striking insights into the work of one of the greatest architects of the century.

Son architecture est avant tout finlandaise, mais ses caractères spécifiques - lien étroit avec l'environnement, dimension humaine, traitement des matériaux et ingénieuse utilisation de l'éclairage - ont assuré sa notoriété et la diffusion de son oeuvre bien au-delà des frontières nationales. " Mes meubles sont rarement, sinon jamais, le résultat d'un design professionnel. Je les ai conçus, pratiquement sans exception, en tant qu'éléments de projets architecturaux... " Si les meubles réalisés par Aalto ne se comprennent que dans un dessein architectural global, certains d'entre eux, décontextualisés, tels la chaise de Paimio ou le vase Savoy, sont devenus des références mondiales du design contemporain. L'histoire de cette production est aussi celle de la collaboration avec Aino, sa deuxième femme, bien que les attributions ne permettent pas toujours d'affirmer que telle ou telle pièce est le fruit d'un travail commun. Elle est par ailleurs indissociable du travail avec l'entreprise Artek et les verreries Iittala, qui éditent aujourd'hui encore les créations d'Aalto. Cet ouvrage, fondé sur des renseignements tirés d'archives jusqu'alors inexploitées, constitue la première vue d'ensemble de la production d'Aalto en tant que designer. Il permet de préciser le travail de l'artiste d'un point de vue structurel, sa recherche de lignes et de formes nouvelles, tout en le replaçant dans les préoccupations sociologiques qui l'ont toujours motivé. Ainsi est mise en lumière la sensibilité de cet architecte en matière de design, qui s'étend avec une rigueur et une qualité égales de l'urbanisme des grands projets au mobilier conçu pour les habiter, des fauteuils aux objets de verre, des poignées de porte aux luminaires.

Alvar Aalto, 1998 in Kuortane in Finnland geboren, ist eine der letzten Persönlichkeiten der großen Architekturgeneration des 20. Jahrhunderts. Seine Bauten, vom Städtebau bis zum einfachen Wohnhaus, wirken als einheitliche Organismen. Formale Architekturtheorien liegen ihm fern. Der Weg eines jeden Bauwerkes ist vom ersten flüchtigen Skizzenstrich bis zur Übergabe an den Bauherren faszinierend und ganz von der Persönlichkeit des Architekten bestimmt. Alles bleibt lebendig und in Bewegung, wirkt ungezwungen und natürlich, gleichsam gewachsen aus der Umgebung. Das besondere Gefühl für die Wichtigkeit einzelner Bauteile und Bauabschnitte macht es möglich, auch aus bescheideneren Bauaufgaben eine Vielfalt an individueller Prägung herauszuholen. So gehen auch Möbel Lampen, Vorhänge und alle die Dinge, die ein Haus erst bewohnbar machen, zum größten Teil aus den Entwürfen und Experimenten Aaltos hervor. Die Einheit der Idee, der Form und der Lebensweise bildet das zentrale Thema seines Schaffens.
