Over the last year, author Melissa Milne asked thousands of women how they feel about their bodies, weight, food, and self-image. The answers were shocking: more than 80 percent feel guilty after a meal; nearly 60 percent have dieted down a dress size to please a man; almost two-thirds say they have been body-shamed by another woman--and 50 percent would rather be skinnier than happier or smarter. These women are sick and tired of feeling bad while trying to lose weight. And Milne has the solution: Don't be perfect--just be Naughty. The Naughty Diet says screw guilt and pass the wine. Every chapter is built around a series of Naughty Steps -- science-based, life-tested, attitude-adjusted approaches to food, exercise, and life management -- each informed by the country's top doctors and nutritionists. Following this plan, you'll learn how to effortlessly embrace principles of healthy living, as well as pleasurable eating, changing the way you think about food -- and yourself. Far from telling you what you have to do, The Naughty Diet instead frees you to live life to the fullest; without shame, guilt, fear, or confusion. By doing so, you'll also allow for indulgences, including chocolate, wine, bread, and cheese, along with more than 40 deliciously nutritious recipes inside the book. Now balanced, the guilt -- and the pounds -- will melt away.

A stimulating and provocative collection, these essays challenge received notions about the culture and history of medieval Russia and offer fresh approaches to problems of textual interpretation, the theory of the medieval text, and the analysis of alternative, nonverbal texts. The contributors, international specialists from many disciplines, investigate issues ranging over history, cultural anthropology, art history, and ritual. They have produced a worthy companion to the first volume of Medieval Russian Culture, published in 1984.

More than 100 indigenous languages are spoken in Mexico and Central America. Each language partitions the color spectrum according to a pattern that is unique in some way. But every local system of color categories also shares characteristics with the systems of other Mesoamerican languages and of languages elsewhere in the world. This book presents the results of the Mesoamerican Color Survey, which Robert E. MacLaury conducted in 1978-1981. Drawn from interviews with 900 speakers of some 116 Mesoamerican languages, the book provides a sweeping overview of the organization and semantics of color categorization in modern Mesoamerica. Extensive analysis and MacLaury's use of vantage theory reveal complex and often surprising interrelationships among the ways languages categorize colors. His findings offer valuable cross-cultural data for all students of Mesoamerica. They will also be of interest to all linguists and cognitive scientists working on theories of categorization more generally.
