"There was an 'aura of greatness' about him," said observers. How did John A. Burns-a man who came from humble origins-develop this distinctive quality and become one of the greatest leaders in Hawaii history? Through a career in law enforcement, and politics that culminated in one of the most revered governorships in Hawaii history, John A. Burns displayed leadership abilities that brought commitment from supporters, commanded respect from adversaries, and led a political revolution at a time when transformational change in Hawaii was desperately needed. Out of the divisiveness of a Hawaii riddled by class warfare, racism, and economic division, arose a new Hawaii of greater unity, equality, and opportunity for all spearheaded by Burns' leadership. His accomplishments are all the more extraordinary given his personal trials and tragedies that would have proven hindrances to others. AN AURA OF GREATNESS: A REFLECTION ON GOVERNOR JOHN A. BURNS explains the core principles that defined Burns throughout his life and career written from a family member's perspective, and provides revealing insights that will serve today's leaders well as they strive similarly to develop their own auras of greatness.

David Hume (1711–1776) swam in the eighteenth-century philosophic waters created and dominated by Scottish Presbyterian thought and politics. Robert Case argues that this reformed environment is expressed, however inchoately, in much of what Hume wrote. Hume’s eighteenth-century views on experience, customs, and common life provide a viable social and political framework for American contemporary life. If the New Testament writer Jude marinated his theological thoughts in the midst of the prevailing Jewish culture of his day in order to arrive at the inspired narrative of his little book, and if the American founding fathers can be said to establish a “Christian” nation, however that is defined, David Hume can be said to have been greatly influenced by the Scottish political and theological pieties of John Knox (1513–1572), Samuel Rutherford (1600–1661) and their successors. Into our post-Christian culture, David Hume’s notion of the power of custom offers a non-religious-based society as an alternative for securing stable, secure, and satisfying social relationships and structures in which Christianity can flourish. Robert Case’s principal objective is to show how Hume’s ambassadorial task of straddling the world of the academy and the world of the main street is relevant for today’s American post-Christian evangelical mindset.

Blending poetic language and scientific fact, Carolyn Lesser explores how one magnificent bear lives throughout the year. Impressionistic paintings follow the bear as he hunts, swims, plays, and journeys in the far north. “Lyrical in tone and accurate in zoological detail, the narrative is ideal for one-on-one sharing.”--School Library Journal

Now more than ever the role of icons and monuments in shaping a national identity is a subject of vital importance to scholars of both nationalism and memory studies. While the nation-state undoubtedly has a powerful influence on a society’s cultural memory, it cannot necessarily control the ways in which icons are perceived. Once created, national symbols and perceptions of them take on a life of their own. Taking an innovative approach to the study of Iranian nationalism, Merhavy examines the way symbols from Iran’s past have played an important role in the struggles between political, religious, and ideological movements over legitimacy in the last five decades. Using a rich variety of primary sources, he traces the process by which these symbols have been appropriated, rejected, and reinterpreted by the Pahlavi state, the Islamic opposition, and finally, the Islamic Republic. In doing so, this volume contributes to our understanding of cultural symbols that survive political upheavals, dramatic and significant as they may be. It also contributes to the growing body of literature that challenges the state centered perspective of much research on modern Iran by exposing the ever growing importance of civil society in the Iranian public sphere from the second half of the twentieth century onward.

This text examines evil in the context of a post-metaphysical world, a world that no longer believes in a God. The question of how and why God permits evil events to occur is replaced by the question of how and why humans perform evil acts.
