Excerpt from An Essay Professional Ethics The dignity and importance of the Profes sion of the Law, in a public point of View, can hardly be over-estimated. It is in its relation to society at large that it is proposed to con sider it. This may be done by showing its influence upon legislation and jurisprudence. These are the right and left hands of govern ment in carrying out the great purposes of society. By legislation is meant the making of Iaw - its primary enactment or subsequent. Alteration. Jurisprudence is the science of What the law is or means, and its practical ap plication to cases as they arise. The province of legislation is jns dare - ofjurisprudence, jugcl'icero'i. The latter is entirely in the hands of lawyers as a body - the former almost entirely. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Essays in Ethics The following essays, as the headings tell, were for the most part delivered as lectures. Naturally some, if not all, were denounced by some who heard them as essayish and I hereby own the justice of the imputation. It is difficult to make abstract ethics actual, and no less so to keep applied ethics free of priggishness. Something went wrong, perhaps, when the term ethics \was generally substituted for morals. Given the drawbacks, however, certain problems have to be discussed and the ensuing pleas seemed to me to need to be put. Perhaps the case that now least needs urging is that put in the essay on The Ethics of Vivi Section, in part a criticism of positions which I believe are now abandoned by most, if not all, of the Opponents of cruel experiments upon animals. But the analysis there undertaken is in itself, I hope, not useless; and in a Postscript I have sought to indicate what I consider the sound line of resistance. Excerpt from Human Value an Ethical Essay The following essay makes a return to the Greek tradition in its method of studying ethics, the tradition of considering ethical questions in very close connection with politics. The business of the moralist is to explain the nature of virtue and the conditions of the virtuous life. Now the social and political system within which a man lives has an immense influence upon him morally. Plato recognized that. The main lesson of the Republic is that a good personal life is possible only in a good state. We cannot say what a good life is unless we have made up our minds what sort of state is good. Englishmen, with their traditional individualism, have tended to overlook this fact. The present essay has been written, quite frankly, with certain political pre-judgments. The last essay of a similar character by a British thinker is Mill's Utilitarianism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Progressive Morality: An Essay in Ethics The other remark, which will require a some what longer statement, is that, in the present treatise, Morality will be discussed as an inde pendent science, that is to say, on grounds dis tinct from religious and theological considerations. That the conceptions of Religion and Morality are intimately connected, and that, when we have constituted a system of morality on inde pendent grounds, it is inevitable that we should compare with it our religious convictions, I, of course, do not for a moment deny. Religion is more than Morality; it is the consecration and idealisation of it in a Perfect Being, whom we are constrained to revere, adore, and love. But there is a Wide difference between Religion as an aspiration of the human soul and par ticular systems of religious doctrine and worship.
