An Index To Printed Pedigrees

Here is a guide to printed British genealogies, containing over 16,000 references to pedigrees in county histories, compendia, record and society publications, heralds' visitations, etc., down to the time the work was originally published (1867). The arrangement is by counties for England and thereunder alphabetically by family name for each title analyzed, with special sections devoted to General Works, Visitations, etc. The compiler has facilitated research still further by means of a complete index to all families, which occupies nearly 100 pages and contains about 8,000 entries.

This is a reproduction of a book published before 1923. This book may have occasional imperfections such as missing or blurred pages, poor pictures, errant marks, etc. that were either part of the original artifact, or were introduced by the scanning process. Excerpt from An Index to Printed Pedigrees, Contained in County and Local Histories, the Herald's Visitations, and in the More Important Genealogical Collections IN the autumn of 1863 I announced my intention to pub lish a volume on the Bibliography of Heraldry and Genealogy, and in the following spring, in Notes and Queries and in the Herald and Genealogist, I promised to add to it an Index to the Pedigrees contained in the County Histories, and other topographical works. Partly in consequence of the extent of the materials I have collected for that work, and partly on account of the produc tion of a hastily prepared compilation of a similar nature to the present Index, I have been compelled to postpone for a time the publication of the bibliographical manual, and to issue my Index as a separate work. In submitting it to the genealogical student, I can only express a hope that the trifling errors which may have escaped notice, in over sixteen thousand references, in duplicate, will not militate against the general adoption of it as a guide to printed genealogies.
