They explain how to measure and analyze macroeconomic and microeconomic data and how to integrate the two, which diverged sharply during the Great Depression and have rarely interacted since. They demonstrate macroanalysis with studies of recession and recovery in the US from 1929 to 1974, theoretical concepts and empirical measurement of saving and investment, accounting for saving and capital formation in the US from 1947 to 1991, and other cases. For microanalysis they look at a study of differential fertility based on census data, longitudinal establishment data, and other topics. For the integration of the two, they take a more methodological approach, describing such features as macroaccount and microdata sets, the relation of methodology to the technology of economic research, and measuring economic and social performance. The importance and usefulness of establishment microdata for economic research and policy analysis is outlined and contrasted with traditional products of statistical agencies -- aggregate cross-section tabulations. It is argued that statistical agencies must begin to seriously rethink the way they view establishment data products.

Inference control in statistical databases, also known as statistical disclosure limitation or statistical confidentiality, is about finding tradeoffs to the tension between the increasing societal need for accurate statistical data and the legal and ethical obligation to protect privacy of individuals and enterprises which are the source of data for producing statistics. Techniques used by intruders to make inferences compromising privacy increasingly draw on data mining, record linkage, knowledge discovery, and data analysis and thus statistical inference control becomes an integral part of computer science. This coherent state-of-the-art survey presents some of the most recent work in the field. The papers presented together with an introduction are organized in topical sections on tabular data protection, microdata protection, and software and user case studies.
