The domain of spirituality, separated from its theological overburden, believes in the existence of a spiritual self, presumed to be distinctly separate from the psychological self. The spiritual eternal self, also known as the soul or spirit (sometimes supported by an overarching Spirit), is asserted to be operating behind the ephemeral self. This book takes a contrarian stance; it argues that the premise of the soul concept is obtained through the magic of language, maintained through the marvel of the brain's biochemistry, and sustained through the mirage of the psychological juggernauts of the brain. The magic, the marvel and the mirage, together, bring about subtle shifts as the linguistic brain suppresses many psychological details, habitually applies mental templates such as inversions and dichotomies, and enhances its language by coining religious and spiritual metaphors. The consequence of these changes is that the usual flickering self begins to be impressed by itself, believing it is buttressed by something transcendental and eternal within: the soul or the spirit. The self, although indoctrinated during its formative years, also begins to assimilate and accept the opinion that the overwhelming weight of religious doctrines and dogmas, the overburden, signifies as the legitimate proof for the eternal soul.

One of the most important contributions of Chasidut to Judaism has been in the realm of psychology. Chasidic teachings interpret and apply the myriad Kabbalistic metaphors to the realm of the human psyche and soul. Yet, for all the expansive analyses and discussion of the human psyche produced by the Chasidic masters (specifically the Rebbes of Chabad-Lubavitch), there has been a pronounced lack of an ordered and modern review of the psyche. In the early years of the 20th century, Dr. Fischel Schneersohn, a colleague of Sigmund Freud and a relative of the then Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Shalom Dov Ber Schneersohn, took it upon himself to translate the Chasidic nomenclature and discourse on the psyche into scientific language that would be useful to the modern psychologist. Unfortunately, for whatever the reasons may be, his yearning to share the Torah s wisdom on the psyche was not to be fulfilled. Since then, the need for introducing these teachings to the public in general and to the professional field of psychologists has only grown. This book is an important contribution to the creation of psychology and therapeutic techniques based purely on the Divine wisdom of the Torah and specifically its inner dimensions of Kabbalah and Chassidut. By offering a structured review and explanation of the psyche and its place in the larger and more complex super-structure of the soul, this volume provides a foundational guide for mental and spiritual health practitioners as well as for those wishing to deepen their understanding of Kabbalah and Chassidut.

Do you sometimes feel that no matter how much wealth you accumulate, toys you own, friendships you make or physical and mental mountains you conquer, you're still at the end of the day unfulfilled - with a gnawing deep down inside that something is "still missing" or that you're meant for something greater than what you're doing right now? You're not alone. That loss of direction, purpose and deep, fulfilling meaning is absent in the lives of some of the most successful or fit people you'll ever meet.Over the past several years, as Ben has repeatedly witnessed in both himself and others the ultimate unfulfillment of a sole focus upon carnal, fleshly pursuits, and as he's observed great thinkers and philosophers while continually seeking wisdom, he's become increasingly convinced that caring for one's spirit is as important-no, actually far more important-than caring for one's body and brain. But after your muscles have atrophied, your skin has sagged, your brain has degraded and accumulated with plaque, your blood vessels have become clogged, and your nerves have become weakened-long after your relentless pursuit of fitness or health or longevity has become a vain effort-your spirit can be just as strong and as bright as ever. How about you? Have you gained the world yet left your soul behind? Do you feel like that most important part of you - your soul - is shrunken, neglected and unfit? Do you crave for more meaning, purpose and fulfillment in your life? Then this book - Fit Soul - was written exactly for you. Within the pages - written in a practical, easy-to-understand way with tips, tricks, strategies and solutions that will be simple to implement within your own life - you'll discover everything you need to know to care for your soul, attain true spiritual fitness, discover union with God and find the happiness you have always craved for and deserve.
