One of the stories, "Babette's Feast," was adapted for the cinema by Gabriel Axel in 1987, and won the Academy Award for best foreign film.

Originally written in 1958, the stories which comprise this volume were among the last to be written by Isak Dinesen. The theme of Ariel runs through the collection which includes The Driver, Tempests, Babette's Feast, The Immortal Story and The Ring.

It tells the story of a French cook working in a puritanical Norwegian community, who treats her employers to the decadent feast of a lifetime. All the stories have a mystic, fairy-tale quality, linked by themes of angels, the sea, dreams and fate.
