Excerpt from Applied Aerodynamics Although air is the uid indicated by has been found that many of the phenomena of uid motion are of the particular uid moved. Advantage has been taken of arranging experimental work, and in a later chapter a stri illustration of the truth of the above observation is given. Th between aerodynamics and the dynamics of uid motion tends in any comprehensive treatment of the subject. Excerpt from Experiments in Aerodynamics I have to thank the board of direction of the Bache fund of the National Academy of Sciences for their aid, and also the trustees of the Western Uni versity of Pennsylvania for their permission to use the means of the observatory under their charge in contributing to the same end, and I desire to acknowledge especially the constant and valued help of Mr. Frank W. Very, who has assisted me in all these experiments, and my further obligation to Mr. George E. Curtis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book covers classical and modern aerodynamics, theories and related numerical methods, for senior and first-year graduate engineering students, including: -The classical potential (incompressible) flow theories for low speed aerodynamics of thin airfoils and high and low aspect ratio wings. - The linearized theories for compressible subsonic and supersonic aerodynamics. - The nonlinear transonic small disturbance potential flow theory, including supercritical wing sections, the extended transonic area rule with lift effect, transonic lifting line and swept or oblique wings to minimize wave drag. Unsteady flow is also briefly discussed. Numerical simulations based on relaxation mixed-finite difference methods are presented and explained. - Boundary layer theory for all Mach number regimes and viscous/inviscid interaction procedures used in practical aerodynamics calculations. There are also four chapters covering special topics, including wind turbines and propellers, airplane design, flow analogies and hypersonic (rotational) flows. A unique feature of the book is its ten self-tests and their solutions as well as an appendix on special techniques of functions of complex variables, method of characteristics and conservation laws and shock waves. The book is the culmination of two courses taught every year by the two authors for the last two decades to seniors and first-year graduate students of aerospace engineering at UC Davis.

Excerpt from Elements of Practical Aerodynamics Although aerodynamics deals with air in motion and aerostatics with air at rest, a short chapter on aerostatics has been included because it is believed that students of aerodynamics should be acquainted with the elements of the sister subject. Excerpt from The Mechanical Principles of the Aeroplane Mathematically speaking, we can calculate the force exerted by the uid on the body by adding up vectorially the pressures on the various parts of the exposed surface. But this is generally of little help to us, because in most cases we are quite ignorant of the pressures. Set up in the uid. But of one thing we can be certain a priori, namely, that the exerted by a uid on an immersed body when there is relative motion is in the nature a resistance, tending to reduce the relative motion. This is the inference derived from such ordinary experiences as walking against a wind, or trying to keep a boat still in a current of water.
