Il volume 32.1 è suddiviso in due parti. La prima comprende gli articoli proposti annualmente alla rivista da studiosi italiani e stranieri che illustrano ricerche archeologiche interdisciplinari in cui l’uso delle tecnologie informatiche risulta determinante per l’acquisizione, l’elaborazione e l’interpretazione dei dati. Tecniche di analisi statistica, banche dati, GIS e analisi spaziali, tecniche di rilievo tridimensionale e ricostruzioni virtuali, sistemi multimediali, contribuiscono a documentare le testimonianze del passato e a diffondere i risultati della ricerca scientifica. La seconda parte del volume contiene un inserto speciale curato da Angela Bellia e dedicato a una tematica innovativa, l’archeomusicologia, un campo di ricerca multidisciplinare che adotta i metodi dell’archeologia per lo studio della musica e della vita musicale nel mondo antico. Gli articoli s’incentrano sul ruolo delle tecnologie digitali basate sulla modellazione 3D e sulla simulazione del suono per ampliare le conoscenze sugli strumenti musicali dell’antichità e sul prezioso, ma estremamente labile, patrimonio sonoro. Chiude il volume la sezione dedicata alle Note e recensioni.

Il numero 34.1, 2022 della rivista Archeologia e Calcolatori è caratterizzato dalla pubblicazione degli Atti di due Convegni internazionali. Il primo riguarda la sedicesima edizione del Convegno ArcheoFOSS, dal titolo “Open Software, Hardware, Processes, Data and Formats in Archaeological Research”, svoltosi a Roma il 22-23 settembre 2022 presso la sede del Digilab della Sapienza Università di Roma. Gli Atti, curati da Julian Bogdani e Stefano Costa, comprendono 21 articoli che ben testimoniano il successo e la vitalità dell’iniziativa, nata nel 2006, cui si è più volte dato spazio nelle pagine della rivista. La seconda parte del volume, che raccoglie 14 contributi, è stata curata da Carlo Citter e Agostino Sotgia ed è dedicata agli Atti della Sessione speciale “Modelling the Landscape. From Prediction to Postdiction” della settima edizione della Landscape Archaeology Conference (Iași, Romania 10-15 September 2022). Si tratta di un tema dedicato all’uso dei modelli per lo studio dei paesaggi antichi, considerato sia attraverso l’approccio predittivo “tradizionale”, perché in uso dagli anni Novanta, sia attraverso quello postdittivo, che i curatori definiscono più “sperimentale”.

It embraces that global idea of ​​archaeological data that integrates all the discipline declinations without any thematic or chronological constraints. Data is at the centre, and around lies everything that can stem from it: interpretations, hypotheses, reconstructions, applications, theoretical and methodological reflections, critical ideas, constructive discussions.

Il volume 32.2 è suddiviso in due parti. La prima contiene un inserto speciale, intitolato “From Pottery to Context. Archaeology and Virtual Modelling” e curato da Vincenzo Baldoni. L’inserto, che raccoglie complessivamente 11 contributi, è suddiviso a sua volta in due sezioni, di cui la prima (The ‘Alma Idea’ Numana Project) illustra i principali risultati del progetto di ricerca “Dal reperto al paesaggio: analisi archeologica e modellazione virtuale delle necropoli picene di Numana (AN)”, promosso dall’Università di Bologna, mentre la seconda (From Pottery to Context: Methodologies, Practices, Case Studies) approfondisce alcune tematiche di ricerca di particolare attualità nel settore dell’archeologia digitale. Nella seconda parte del volume, intitolata “Archaeological Computing: Selected Papers from the 2020 IMEKO TC-4 MetroArchaeo International Conference” e curata da Alessandra Caravale, sono pubblicati i migliori contributi scientifici sull’informatica archeologica selezionati da un Comitato scientifico internazionale e premiati nel corso dell’edizione del Convegno internazionale Metrology for Archaeology and Cultural Heritage promosso nel 2020 dall’Università di Trento https://www.metroarcheo.com/ma2020/awards

This study presents new evidence for the development of commerce and inter-regional trade through survey and analysis of urban layout and architecture. The study of Roman urbanism – especially its early (Republican) phases – is extensively rooted in the evidence provided by a series of key sites, several of them located in Italy. Some of these Italian towns (e.g. Fregellae, Alba Fucens, Cosa) have received a great deal of scholarly attention in the past and they are routinely referenced as textbook examples, framing much of our understanding of the broad phenomenon of Roman urbanism. However, discussions of these sites tend to fall back on well-established interpretations, with relatively little or no awareness of more recent developments. This is remarkable, since our understanding of these sites has since evolved thanks to new archaeological fieldwork, often characterised by the pursuit of new questions and the application of new approaches. Similarly, new evidence from other sites has since prompted a reconsideration of time-honoured views about the nature, role and long-term trajectory of Roman towns in Italy. Tracing its origins in the Laurence Seminar on Roman Urbanism in Italy: recent discoveries and new directions, which took place at the Faculty of Classics of the University of Cambridge (27–28 May 2022), this volume brings together scholars whose recent work at key sites is contributing to expand, change or challenge our current knowledge and understanding of Roman urbanism in Italy. The individual chapters showcase some of the most recent methods and approaches applied to the study of Roman towns, discussing the broader implications of fresh archaeological discoveries from both well known and less widely known sites, from the Po Plain to Southern Italy, from the Republican to the Late Antique period (and beyond).

This book gathers original papers reporting on innovative methods and tools in design, modelling, simulation and optimization, and their applications in engineering design, manufacturing and other relevant industrial sectors. Topics span from advances in geometric modelling, applications of virtual reality, innovative strategies for product development and additive manufacturing, human factors and user-centered design, engineering design education and applications of engineering design methods in medical rehabilitation and cultural heritage. Chapters are based on contributions to the Second International Conference on Design Tools and Methods in Industrial Engineering, ADM 2021, held on September 9–10, 2021, in Rome, Italy, and organized by the Italian Association of Design Methods and Tools for Industrial Engineering, and Dipartimento di Ingegneria Meccanica e Aerospaziale of Sapienza Università di Roma, Italy. All in all, this book provides academics and professionals with a timely overview and extensive information on trends and technologies in industrial design and manufacturing.
