Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Philosophy - Miscellaneous, grade: 1.0, Leuphana Universität Lüneburg, course: Artists on Economy between Market and Critique, language: English, abstract: In her book “High Price – Art between the Market and Celebrity Culture”, the author Isabelle Graw analyzes and describes the relationship between symbol and market value of a work of art. Are they totally exposed or totally dependent; do they only affect themselves or do they even strive apart? All these considerations were discussed step by step and underlined by examples under various headings and contexts. She takes a look both at the art market, as well as on the goods, respectively economic market, and puts this into the context of today's existing Celebrity culture. From her words, it becomes clear that the art business, which was formerly organized according to the principle of "retail", is undergoing a major change.

This is the first book to explore the phenomenon of glamour and celebrity in contemporary Russian culture, ranging across media forms, disciplinary boundaries and modes of inquiry, with particular emphasis on the media personality. The book demonstrates how the process of ‘celebrification’ in Russia coincides with the dizzying pace of social change and economic transformation, the latter enabling an unprecedented fascination with glamour and its requisite extravagance; how in the 1990s and 2000s, celebrities - such as film or television stars - moved away from their home medium to become celebrities straddling various media; and how celebrity is a symbol manipulated by the dominant culture and embraced by the masses. It examines the primacy of the visual in celebrity construction and its dominance over the verbal, alongside the interdisciplinary, cross-media, post-Soviet landscape of today’s fame culture. Taking into account both general tendencies and individual celebrities, including pop-diva Alla Pugacheva and ex-President and current Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, the book analyses the internal dynamics of the institutions involved in the production, marketing, and maintenance of celebrities, as well as the larger cultural context and the imperatives that drive Russian society’s romance with glamour and celebrity.

This book offers a beautiful exploration of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's works in lithography. It explores the new artistic approach to the poster at the end of the 19th century, which bridged visual and popular culture and turned the relationship between 'high' and 'low' art on its head. Technical innovations in lithography pioneered by Lautrec and other artists produced larger sizes, more varied colours and new effects and launched the role of the poster as a powerful tool for communication and marketing in fin de siecle Paris. Lautrec's embrace of celebrity helped to define the famous hotspots (theatres, cabarets and cafe-concerts) of fin de siecle Paris and made their stars recognisable figures across the whole city. Works by contemporaries such as Pierre Bonnard, Theophile Alexandre Steinlen and Jules Cheret also feature, and Lautrec's influence on British, and particularly Scottish, artists of the period will be explored. These include Walter Richard Sickert, Arthur Melville, John Duncan Fergusson, William Nicholson and James Pryde. Exhibition: Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh, UK (06.10.2018 - 20.01.2019).
