This compilation probably looks like one of the craziest things a human being could spend his or her time on. Yet nobody would wonder at someone taking a short walk every day - after twenty five years that person would have covered a surprisingly long distance. This is exactly the story behind this list, which appeared first as a few pages within the directory StarGuides (or whatever name it had at that time) and as a distinct sister publication since 1990. The idea behind this dictionary is to offer astronomers and related space scientists practical assistance in decoding the numerous abbreviations, acronyms, contractions and symbols which they might encounter in all aspects of the vast range of their professional activities, including traveling. Perhaps it is a bit paradoxical, but if scientists quickly grasp the meaning of an acronym solely in their own specific discipline, they will probably encounter more difficulties when dealing with adjacent fields. It is for this purpose that this dictionary might be most often used. Scientists might also refer to this compilation in order to avoid identifying a project by an acronym which already has too many meanings or confused definitions.

Due to the requirement for enhanced cooling technologies on modern gas turbine engines, advanced research and development has had to take place in field of thermal engineering. Among the gas turbine cooling technologies, impingement jet cooling is one of the most effective in terms of cooling effectiveness, manufacturability and cost. The chapters contained in this book describe research on state-of-the-art and advanced cooling technologies that have been developed, or that are being researched, with a variety of approaches from theoretical, experimental, and CFD studies. The authors of the chapters have been selected from some of the most active researchers and scientists on the subject. This is the first to book published on the topics of gas turbines and heat transfer to focus on impingement cooling alone.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies enable manufacturing systems to sense the environment, adapt to external needs, and extract process knowledge, including business models such as intelligent production, networked collaboration, and extended service models. This book therefore focuses on the implementation of AI in customized manufacturing (CM). The main topics include edge intelligence in manufacturing, heterogeneous networks, intelligent fault diagnosis and maintenance, dynamic resource scheduling in manufacturing, and the construction mode of the smart factory. Based on the insights of CM and AI, the authors demonstrate the implementation of AI in the smart factory for CM, including architecture, information fusion, data analysis, dynamic scheduling, flexible production line construction, and smart manufacturing services. This book will provide important research content for scholars in artificial intelligence, smart manufacturing, machine learning, multi-agent systems, and industrial Internet of Things.

Efficient transfer between science and society is crucial for their future development. The rapid progress of information technology and computer systems offers a large potential and new perspectives for solving complex problems. Mathematical modelling and simulation have become important tools not only in scientific investigations but also in analysing, planning and controlling technological and economic processes. Mathematics, imbedded in an interdisciplinary concept, has become a key technology. The book covers the results of a variety of major projects in industrial mathematics following an initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. All projects are collaborations of industrial companies and university-based researchers, and range from automotive industry to computer technology and medical visualisation. In general, the projects presented in this volume prove that new mathematical ideas and methods can be decisive for the solution of industrial and economic problems.
