Astride Two Worlds

By the middle of the nineteenth century, industrialization and military-technological innovation were beginning to alter drastically the character and conditions of warfare as it had been conducted for centuries. Occurring in the midst of these far-reaching changes, the American Civil War can justly be labeled both the last great preindustrial war and the first major war of the industrial age. Industrial capacity attained new levels of military significance as transportation improved, but in this, as in many other respects, the Civil War was distinctly transitional. Smoothbore artillery still dominated the battlefield, horse-drawn wagons and pack mules still carried the main logistic burden, seamstresses still outnumbered sewing-machine operators. Astride Two Worlds addresses the various causes and consequences of technological change for the course and outcome of the American Civil War.

Astride Two Worlds is the story of my life...the happy care-free years of my early childhood in beautiful Bucovina; the difficult and disturbing years of adolescence during WWII; the harrowing, cruel and hellish existence in Communist prisons in the 1950's; my eventual 'freedom' to continue my studies and earn a living in Communist Romania; my experiences in the West, Italy and America. This book is an account of one individual's struggle to achieve despite all obstacles; leave to posterity an accurate and true record of 'man's inhumanity to man' as experienced by me first hand during the Communist regime and the cruel injustices of a life even in America in our own time. Finally, I try to rise above the historical and factual happenings and assuming certain conditions, hopefully, will materialize, I predict a more equitable and happier future for both worlds...East and West.

Surviving in Two Worlds brings together the voices of twenty-six Native American leaders. The interviewees come from a variety of tribal backgrounds and include such national figures as Oren Lyons, Arvol Looking Horse, John Echohawk, William Demmert, Clifford Trafzer, Greg Sarris, and Roxanne Swentzell. Their interviews are divided into five sections, grouped around the themes of tradition, history and politics, healing, education, and culture. They take readers into their lives, their dreams and fears, their philosophies and experiences, and show what they are doing to assure the survival of their peoples and cultures, as well as the earth as a whole. Their analyses of the past and present, and especially their counsels for the future, are timely and urgent.

Italian mathematics in that period was shaped by a colorful array of strong personalities who concentrated their efforts on a select number of fields and won international recognition and respect in an incredibly short time.
