This is the first systematic presentation of Hellenistic astrology to the modern astrological world, and as such it uncovers rigorous techniques that have been lost to us for centuries. How exactly did ancient astrologers assess a chart for fame, career, and parents, love, and happiness? This book surveys ancient depictions of planets, affiliations between the planets and the zodiac, lots, houses or places, aspects, orientality, and fixed stars. The final chapters survey predictive systems used by ancient astrologers. Ancient natal and predictive techniques are applied to the charts and lives of over forty well-known historical and contemporary figures.Students and professional astrologers will find this book a treasure of astrological insight, technique, and new interpretative possibilities. Not only will you gain knowledge of how ancient astrologers practiced their trade, but you will also have new tools that apply to modern life.

In western astrology we use of course Roman names for the planetary symbols; but when you look on the mythological explanations, you usually get Greek mythology to explain them. Doesn't count: NOMEN EST OMEN ? Searching the mythological rests of the original deities Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturnus it was necessesary to dive deeply into the history of theology because the well-known literates like Ovid, Virgil and Lucretius preferred to retell Greek myths instead of preserving their own roots. In the last centuries (until about 1900) these authors werde taken as sources for theological research and there was no discrimination between literature/poetry and original italic tradition. Perspective and moral view of the 19th century added more misinterpretations and made the knowledge of Roman religion almost vanish. Existing rests are collected in this book and compared with the actual astrological symbols. So the reader can recognize how much of Roman ideas can be found in the planetary symbols nowadays. Simultaneously new points of view are opened for the interpretation of Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.

Taken together, the luminaries and five planets express a totality of our human nature and life concerns: our failings and deceptions, the changing conditions of our lives, and our possibilities for living abundantly. They account for both personal uniqueness and our lives as connected to the larger world. How have the original significance of these planets been reduced in modern astrology and at what cost? By reclaiming and redeveloping the significance of these seven planetary bodies, astrology can become more relevant to the real issues that people have. This book gives fascinating background on the development of these planets in the pre-modern world, as well as exploring new ways their traditions can be looked at today. Joseph Crane's scholarship and profound reverence for the importance of virtue and character in our troubled world is evident in his exploration of solar and lunar heroism, wisdom, friendship, and love, and his discussion of how to find these qualities in the natal chart. Wisdom seekers and astrologers of all kinds, looking to deepen their understanding and practice, will find this book a worthy guide.
