Atomic and Plasma-Material Interaction Data for Fusion

This volume contains three articles which consider the results of an IAEA co-ordinated research project into the cooling rates of nuclear fusion plasma impurities involved in radiated processes, an important aspect of modelling and diagnostic studies of fusion plasmas.

The twelfth volume of Atomic and Plasma-Material Interaction Data for Fusion represents the result of a coordinated effort of leading theoretical groups within the IAEA Co-ordinated Research Project (CRP) on Radiative Cooling Rates of Fusion Plasma Impurities. The contributions of the participants of this CRP, contained in the present volume, significantly enlarge the available information on radiative processes taking place in different regions of fusion plasmas. This information is an important ingredient in many modelling and diagnostic studies of fusion plasmas.

The present volume of Atomic and Plasma-Material Interaction Data for Fusion presents the results of a coordinated research project (CRP) on plasma-wall interaction with irradiated tungsten and tungsten alloys in fusion devices. The chemical element tungsten is widely foreseen as a plasma-facing material in a fusion reactor, where it is subject to an intense neutron radiation flux. This publication provides details of a 5-year project devoted to better understanding the properties of tungsten in this environment through experimental study and theoretical modelling. Of particular practical concern is the viability of the metal as a structural material after irradiation damage, and its increased propensity to absorb the tritium fuel used in a fusion reaction.

Atomic and plasma-material interaction processes play an important role in thermonuclear fusion plasmas and the knowledge of these processes has a significant impact on fusion energy research and development. The present volume provides a comprehensive survey of atomic and plasma-material interaction aspects of controlled thermonuclear fusion. The review articles included in this volume describe the role of atomic and plasma-material interaction processes in the currently most active fusion research areas and emphasize the need for accurate quantitative information on these processes for resolving many outstanding issues in fusion research and reactor design development such as plasma energy balance, particle transport and confinement, impurity control, thermal power and helium exhaust, plasma heating and fuelling, edge plasma physics, development of fusion reactor plasma facing components and plasma diagnostics and modelling.
