Auburn, the county seat of Placer County, was founded during the Gold Rush in 1848. Unlike many such towns in the Mother Lode, Auburn has remained a vibrant and growing town ever since. This city's relevance since the initial influx of gold seekers is due in part to its location at a nexus of transpottation routes, both old and new. Halfway between San Francisco and Reno and at an elevation of just over 1,000 feet---above the fog and below the snow---Auburn is a very attractive place to live. Furthermore, it is a place with sincere respect for its roots, as evidenced by its restored old town, preserved courthouse building, and other historic structures throughout town. Auburn native Arthur Sommers received his bachelor of arts in history from San Francisco State College in 1972 and has been collecting historic artifacts of the Mother Lode for more than a decade. In this volume of vintage photography, Sommers presents an Auburn that has evolved from Gold Rush times while retaining much of its identity. The majority of images in this book come from his private collection of early Placer County views of mining, industry, business, and family life in the foothills of California. The distinctive dome-shaped hills scattered throughout Fort Hill Cemetery were formed ten thousand years ago when receding glaciers deposited debris in piles. Centuries later, these dunes are covered with topsoil that supports the growth of trees and foliage. The result is an atmosphere reverberant with magic. This ambiance was felt by the area's many settlers, from the ancient culture of Mound Builders to the the Cayuga nation of the Iroquois Confederacy and even the descendants of the European settlers who pushed out the Cayugas and decided to use the land as a cemetery, to preserve its wild and majestic beauty. Judge Elijah Miller, William H. Seward's father-in-law, was instrumental in making that happen-and was the first person to be buried there. The influence of the site's mysticism is not limited to human perception. Tens of thousands of crows convene there from fall through spring for orientation to urban survival. It is as though Fort Hill is the Ellis Island for the corvine population. Before the crows arrive for their wintry bivouac, the monarch butterflies converge in early fall to perform their ritual aerial ballet in preparation for the migratory journey to the Yucatan.

As the companion volume to Around Auburn, this pictorial history chronicles the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries in Auburn, New York. Local historian Stephanie E. Przybylek has compiled another impressive collection of images in a joint effort with the Cayuga Museum to preserve the history of Auburn. Around Auburn Volume II features images from the museum, the Community Preservation Committee, and private collections. Included in this volume are views of Genesee Street in the bustling 1920s, interior shots of the McIntosh & Seymour factory, and Lakeside Park and Enna Jettick Park, amusement parks that served as summer playgrounds for generations of local residents on the shores of Owasco Lake. The strong community bonds created by the hardship of the Great Depression and two world wars are documented, as well as immigration in the early twentieth century, which added rich ethnic and cultural contrasts to Auburn.
