Australian Chart Book 1940 1969

Published in 2005, this book is the result of many years of historical research into the most popular songs and records of this thirty year period in Australia. It is based on charts specially compiled for this publication, from hit parades, radio charts and best sellers lists. From 1940 to 1948, I have compiled monthly Top 20s, and from 1949 to 1955, weekly Top 20s. From 1956 to 1958, the size of the chart varies, and from 1958 onward, a weekly Top 100 is used. Details of albums charts from 1965 to 1969 are also included. Aviation extended the horizon of international touring across Asia and the Pacific in the 1950s and 1960s. Nightclubs in Hong Kong, Manila, Melbourne, Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo, and Taipei presented an international array of touring acts. This book investigates how this happened. It explores the post-war formation of the Asia Pacific region through international touring and the transformation of entertainment during the ‘jet age’ of aviation. Drawing on archival research across the region, Bollen investigates how touring variety forged new relations between artists, audiences, and nations. Mapping tours and tracing networks by connecting fragments, he reveals how versatile artists translated repertoire in circulation as they toured, and how entrepreneurial endeavours harnessed the production of national distinction to government agendas. He argues that touring variety on commercial circuits diversified the repertoire in regional circulation, anticipating the diversity emerging in state-sanctioned multiculturalisms, and driving the government-construction of national theatres for cultural diplomacy.

It is based on the charts of Australian Music Report from 1993 to 1998, and from specially compiled charts from 1999 to 2009. It covers the weekly National Top 100 Singles charts (1993 to 2009), and Albums charts (Top 100 from 1993 to 1998, and Top 50 from 1999 to 2009). Australian music has a proud, colourful and successful history. In 2008, Australian rock and roll turned 50. This book names the best Australian albums of the last 50 years. It places each album in order (from 1 u 100) and discusses why each album deserves its place. It tells the story behind the making of the album, where the album fits in the artist's career and the album's impact on the local and world stage etc. The entries will feature new interviews with the artists and the producers/managers involved in the recording and the release of the album. It wouldn't be a good list if it didn't polarise people and we hope that this list will. We also hope that it will get people sitting around comparing their favourites and discovering or re-discovering these great albums and others. With 70 years of loving and writing about Australian music between us, we shamelessly believe we've earned the right to write this book. And we think we've got it right.
