"Will you join us in a camping trip to the Pacific Coast?" This alluring invitation was addressed to the writer one cold, drizzly night in the early spring of 1866 by Captain Hill Whitmore. The result of this invitation was that author Julius Charles Birge embarked on an expedition with six of his friends as well as others invited for the trip. Starting from their home in Wisconsin, they travelled through the Missouri River and then moved westwards through various states ultimately ending up in the western states of Oregon and California, before circling back to the middle in Kansas state. The book is his travel memoir for the journey and it provides an excellent look at early nineteenth century American life, culture and geography.

I have crossed the plains to the coast many times, and I can take a train of oxen or mules and turn them out one whole day every sixth or seventh day, free to range for twenty-four hours, and I can make this trip in less time and bring my stock through to the Pacific in better condition than any fool can who drives them even a little every day.'

Michael Evenari's biography unfolds his exciting, manifold life: his love for botany, the confrontation with political events as a youngster and his thrilling experience of helping in the development of Israel. Evenari takes us on his exciting expeditions in the company of his beloved wife. He tells us of his meetings with many personalities and about his farm in the Negev. The discovery of long forgotten floodwater irrigated farm systems from the times of King Salomon and their reconstruction became a successful experiment which lead him to teach this approach of runoff agriculture in many parts of the world, initializing progress in the development of various arid areas. As a tribute to his successful scientific life, Evenari was awarded the Balzan Prize in 1988. In April 1989, Michael Evenari died at the age of 84.

Written in 1912 by Julius Birge, The Awakening of the Desert describes an 1866 wagon train trip taken during “the bloody years on the plains.” Recounting the risks of traveling the area surrounding the Oregon Trail, the author faithfully depicts the virgin environment, Native American tribes and abundant wildlife in words that now seem more timely than ever. From Red Cloud going on the warpath, to Mormon services where Brigham Young preached, to the legendary Buffalo Bill, Birge happened upon events, places and people whose significance was revealed with time. Late in his life, understanding the importance of what he had witnessed, he wrote The Awakening of the Desert. An introduction by the author's great-granddaughter sets the stage and makes it easy for the reader to track the arduous journey and understand its purpose.
