The five volume series, Barry's Construction of Buildings, has been established as a standard text on building technology formany years. However, a substantial update has long been required, and while doing this the opportunity has been taken to reduce fivevolumes to two in a more user-friendly format. The introductory volume covers domestic construction and bringstogether material from volumes 1, 2 and part of 5. The extensiverevision includes modern concepts on site assembly, environmentalissues and safety, and features further reading.

BARRY’S INTRODUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION OF BUILDINGS Authoritative, well established, comprehensive, practical, and highly illustrated guide to construction practice Barry’s Introduction to Construction of Buildings provides the basic material an undergraduate student will need to understand how the majority of low-rise buildings are constructed. The text explains construction technology through key functional and performance requirements for the main elements common to all buildings. The material in the Fifth Edition has been updated to ensure it covers the latest building regulations and current construction technology, with particular attention paid to the decisions required on what and how to build to achieve a low carbon, resilient built environment. Design, technology, site assembly, and environmental issues are all covered, showing how buildings that are more efficient, with lower embodied carbon, are constructed. New ‘in chapter’ questions better facilitate self-reflection and learning. Barry’s Introduction to Construction of Buildings contains information on: General principles of construction, regulations and approvals, making choices and sources of information, and responding to climate change Site analysis, setup, security, bedrock and soil types, ground stability, drainage, strip, pad, and raft foundations and scaffolding Functional requirements for floors, including ground-supported concrete floor slabs, timber upper floors, floor finishes, and suspended timber ground floors Pitched roofs and their coverings, sheet metal covering to low-pitched roofs, flat roofs, thermal insulation in flat roofs, parapet walls, and green roofs Barry’s Introduction to Construction of Buildings is an ideal learning resource for undergraduate students and those working towards similar NQF level 5 and 6 qualifications in building and construction. This title is a companion to Barry’s Advanced Construction of Buildings.

This new edition of Barry’s Advanced Construction of Buildings retains the emphasis on larger-scale buildings: primarily residential, commercial and industrial buildings constructed with load bearing frames. A considerable amount of new material has been added but the text remains faithful to Barry’s original concept of explaining construction technology through key functional and performance requirements for the main elements common to all buildings. Of particular note in this new edition is the expanded coverage of building and construction sustainability. This is now presented within the main body of the text, rather than as a separate chapter. Material relating to the Building Regulations has been brought fully up to date, and there is a more thorough treatment of demolition. The rest of the text has been updated as required, with particular attention paid to the illustrations. Advanced undergraduate students and those working towards similar NQF level 5 and 6 qualifications in building and construction will find this the ideal book with which to continue their study of the subject. Robin Barry’s The Construction of Buildings was first published in 1958 and quickly became an established source of information for students of building design and construction. Since then there have been extensive changes in technologies, and in building regulations, standards and codes, as well as a growing concern for the environmental impact of construction. This major revision marks a new stage in the series, with the five volume set being published in two volumes, with substantial changes to text and illustrations: Barry’s Introduction to Construction of Buildings (previously volumes 1, 2 and part of 5) addresses primarily first year (level 1) students Barry’s Advanced Construction of Buildings (previously volumes 3, 4 and part of 5) is aimed at second year (level 2) students Along with this major revision, typical details have been provided and alternative construction approaches have been added to cover work for both new and existing buildings. Photographs from construction sites have been added to aid understanding of the technologies described. This latest edition, now called Barry’s Introduction to Construction of Buildings, continues to be based on Barry’s original concept of explaining construction technology through key functional/performance requirements for the main elements common to all buildings. The second Advanced volume covers framed construction and associated technologies. It takes account of prefabrication and off–site assembly and features a chapter on alternative methods of construction. The new book also reflects the industry’s move towards sustainable construction techniques. As with the first volume, many new diagrams have been added and photographs feature for the first time to aid understanding of the technologies described. The authors Robin Barry, a chartered architect, taught construction technology for many years at the former South Bank Polytechnic. Stephen Emmitt BA (Hons), Dip Arch, MA Prof. Ed, PhD is the Hoffmann Professor of Innovation and Management in Building at the Technical University of Denmark. He is a registered architect with industrial experience and teaches construction technology across a wide range of built environment programmes. Christopher Gorse BSc (Hons), Dip Ed, Dip (H&S), MSc, PhD, MCIOB, MAPM is a Senior Lecturer in Construction Project Management at Leeds Metropolitan University. He is a construction and project management consultant with industrial experience and teaches construction technology across a wide range of built environment programmes.
