Striking advantage consists in being possessed in this collection of the exact copy of the descriptions given from the writings of those old historians in their own words and sentiments, not curtailed or abbreviated by modern refinement; and the real ideas of those venerable authors, whose works, becoming now nearly obselete, are scarcely to be found in any other place than the' library of the' careful collector of scarce and cu rious books - the possessor of which (in general) is as unwilling to lend one of his volumes for pc rusal, as his friend (on his part) would be to take the trouble to read it, or confine himself and his thoughts to decyphering the intricate difficulty of the black letter, or to puzzle out the uncouth phrases and aukward orthography (long since ex ploded and forgotten) of the author. The'chance, therefore, for' the perusal of works of this nature, (the learned and classic scholar always excepted) from the situation they are for the most part placed, in, must be very circumscribed, and even more so, from the want of inclination which the majority of people have, to tum over the long neglected pages, or (probably) tattered leaves of a thick old folio of Ancient History.
