"The publication "Beginning with the Seventies" binds together four exhibitions (GLUT, Radial Change, Collective Acts, Hexsa'am) held at the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery between 2018-2019. Part art exhibition, part research project, the book investigates the 1970s, an era when social movements of all kinds--feminism, environmentalism, LGBTQ rights, Indigenous rights, access to health services and housing--began to coalesce into models of self-organization that overlapped with the production of art and culture. Noting the resurgence of art practice involved with social activism and an increasing interest in the 1970s from younger producers, the Belkin connected with diverse archives and activist networks to bring forward these histories, to commission new works of art and writing and to provide a space for discussion and debate. Categorized by exhibition, each section of "Beginning with the Seventies" takes a different approach to the theme, curating together over 70 artists and writers."--

A reexamination of 1970s France as a decade of intellectual, cultural, and political consequence, both then and now Number 143 of Yale French Studies, "The French Seventies," reintroduces and reorients readers to a decade typically considered a period of disillusionment and malaise in the wake of the 1960s. This collection of essays, edited by Richard J. Golsan and Lynn A. Higgins, shows that the era was in fact a period of intellectual, cultural, and political ferment. It was a time not of spectacular leaps forward but rather of searching, regrouping, and cultivating trends that would flower in the 1980s and beyond, for better or worse. The volume offers interdisciplinary scholarly essays on history, film, national identity as articulated in the mode rétro, social and literary movements, and more. Interviews and personal history essays by major figures who actively participated in this decade add further dimension to this broad collection.

Originally published in 1985, Liberated Cinema: The Yugoslav Experience received the first annual "Close-up" award from the Yugoslav Film Institute in 1986 for "outstanding scholarship and for promoting the values of Yugoslav film art internationally." This new edition has been revised and updated throughout. It has been expanded to complete the story of the new Yugoslav cinema of the 1980s and to address major film developments that have taken place in the former Yugoslavia's five successor states. As in his analysis of past periods of Yugoslav cinema, Goulding situates the most recent developments within the context of film economics, state subsidies, and changing patterns of political control. Most significantly, however, he provides an insightful discussion of the ways in which critically important domestic feature films produced or co-produced from 1991 to 2001 reflect on recent brutal internecine warfare and other contemporary social, cultural, and political realities after the breakup of Yugoslavia.
