This book provides the apprentice or trainee carpenter and joiner with the basic technical knowledge necessary to complete the first half of a City and Guilds Course in Carpentry and Joinery. It will also be a useful reference to any persons studying for examinations, or simply wishing to further their knowledge in one of the associated areas, such as wood machining, cabinet making or general building construction. Dealing with the basic skills and techniques employed in the present day construction industry, the text assumes little prior knowledge of the subject, but lays before the reader a simple, straight forward and readable out of the skills, tools, materials and methods likely to be used or encountered in the workshop, on site or during studies at home or in college.

From the examination of the historiography of finishing work in wood for architecture from the medieval to modern period, it is clear that this field of research is the poor relation of historical and archaeological studies, with the lion's share focusing on the structural work of carpentry. It is on the basis of this observation that the present work has been produced, which results from a conference held in Brussels in 2013. The work demonstrates first the real interest in an approach to finishing work for the study of ancient buildings and the establishment of a precise chronology for their phases of layout as well as in obtaining better understanding of material cultures and ways of living. Second, it reiterates that the limit between carpentry and joinery was often porous, sometimes artificial. Finally, the work stresses that an overall approach to the use of wood is crucial to comprehensively address the organisation of a building, the logic of its construction and its 'utilisation', and more generally, the complex history of the buildings studied. This work, which thus represents a first step toward an overall approach of 'wood material' in European architecture, includes thirteen contributions divided into two thematic sections in keeping with current research practices. The first addresses the divide between structural and finishing work via the question of flooring, ceiling and roofing techniques. The second focuses intrinsically on finishing work by examining the contribution of this craft domain to the organisation, comfort and ornamentation of houses.

Cassell's Carpentry and Joinery' is a practical work on practical handicrafts, and it was first published in the confident belief that it was by far the most exhaustive book on these subjects hitherto produced. This text is a comprehensive guide on carpentry, compromising notes on materials, processes, principles and practice, and including about 1,800 engravings. A great book for carpenters of all levels, this book is not to be missed by discerning woodworkers and constitutes a great addition to collections of woodworking literature. The chapters of this book include: 'Hand Tools and appliances', 'Timber', 'Joints', 'Floors', 'Timber Partitions', 'Timber Roofs', 'Framework of Dormer Windows', 'Half-Timber Constructions', 'Arch Canterings', 'Joiners' Rods', 'Door and Door Frames', 'Window Sashes and Casements', 'Mouldings: Working and Setting-Out', et cetera. Complementing Book 1of the same title, this text takes the student up to the City and Guilds full Craft Certificate level. All aspects of the course are dealt with, along with the associated scientific background, mathematical calculations and drawings required. Although prior knowledge of the subject as provided in Book 1 is assumed , important principles are repeated so that this book can be read independently of the companion volume. Extensively illustrated, each chapter begins with clearly defined objectives and concludes with a series or questions and assignments. The text will prove invaluable as a general workbook for those following advanced woodworking courses, including CITB students and self-employed carpenters, joiner and builders. It is useful supplementary reading for those taking courses in brickwork and cabinetmaking, for trainee woodworking machinists and construction technicians as well as for students of City and Guilds Foundation courses.
