In 1975, Florida's Escambia County and the city of Pensacola experienced a pernicious chain of events. A sheriff's deputy killed a young black man at point-blank range. Months of protests against police brutality followed, culminating in the arrest and conviction of the Reverend H. K. Matthews, the leading civil rights organizer in the county. Viewing the events of Escambia County within the context of the broader civil rights movement, J. Michael Butler demonstrates that while activism of the previous decade destroyed most visible and dramatic signs of racial segregation, institutionalized forms of cultural racism still persisted. In Florida, white leaders insisted that because blacks obtained legislative victories in the 1960s, African Americans could no longer claim that racism existed, even while public schools displayed Confederate imagery and allegations of police brutality against black citizens multiplied. Offering a new perspective on the literature of the black freedom struggle, Beyond Integration reveals how with each legal step taken toward racial equality, notions of black inferiority became more entrenched, reminding us just how deeply racism remained--and still remains--in our society.

This book examines differentiated integration in Europe, providing incisive analyses of domestic politics determinants – political conflict, party responses, citizens’ preferences and other supply and demand side elements. The four countries compared – Germany, Poland, Switzerland and the United Kingdom – afford rich diversity and offer broad empirical material available for cross-country analyses. Featuring interdisciplinary research, this book draws together recent developments in the evolution of European integration differentiation – its dynamics and determinants. This monograph will be of key interest to scholars and students of European integration, comparative politics, political psychology, international relations, and more broadly to European (area) studies.

The phrase "integration of faith and learning" has come to describe the way many Christian colleges and universities understand how all learning falls under the lordship of Jesus Christ. With its origins in the philosophical and theological insights of the Reformed tradition, this phrase has expanded its influence to institutions nurtured by numerous Christian traditions. This volume draws together prominent scholars who reflect on Christian higher education as it may exist beyond the integration model.

Human mobility has been a widely examined phenomenon in the social sciences, and in this increasingly globalized world migration continues to be of significant concern. The chapters comprising this volume on Thinking Beyond the State address the need to think beyond prevailing state discourses in problematizing human movements between Japan and the Philippines, by focusing on the presence of other actors involved in these processes. This collection investigates a range of issues that are part and parcel of the migration experience: citizenship and nationality, migrant incorporation and integration, human security, migrant welfare, philanthropy, identity, and multiculturalism. The editor and contributors aim to inform the larger public of the realities that are embedded in this particular phenomenon, as well as engage academics involved in migration studies. The book will be a valuable resource to those with professional interests in the East Asian region, most particularly in Japan and the Philippines.

The notion of ‘immigrant integration’ is used everywhere – by politicians, policy makers, journalists and researchers – as an all-encompassing framework for rebuilding ‘unity from diversity’ after large-scale immigration. Promising a progressive middle way between backward-looking ideas of assimilation and the alleged fragmentation of multiculturalism, ‘integration’ has become the default concept for states scrambling to deal with global refugee management and the persistence of racial disadvantage. Yet ‘integration’ is the continuance of a long-standing colonial development paradigm. It is how majority-white liberal democracies absorb and benefit from mass migration while maintaining a hierarchy of race and nationality – and the global inequalities it sustains. Immigrant integration sits at the heart of the neo-liberal racial capitalism of recent decades, in which tight control of nation-building and bordering selectively enables some citizens to enjoy the mobilities of a globally integrating world, as other populations are left behind and locked out. Subjecting research and policy on immigrant integration to theoretical scrutiny, The Integration Nation offers a fundamental rethink of a core concept in migration, ethnic and racial studies in the light of the challenge posed by decolonial theory and movements.

New Materials and Devices for 5G Applications and Beyond focuses on the materials, device architectures and enabling integration schemes for 5G applications and emerging technologies. It gives a comprehensive overview of the trade-offs, challenges and unique properties of novel upcoming technologies. Starting from the application side and its requirements, the book examines different technologies under consideration for the different functions, both more conventional to exploratory, and within this context the book provides guidance to the reader on how to possibly optimize the system for a particular application. This book aims at guiding the reader through the technologies required to enable 5G applications, with the main focus on mm-wave frequencies, up to THz. New Materials and Devises for 5G Applications and Beyond is suitable for industrial researchers and development engineers, and researchers in materials science, device engineering and circuit design. Reviews challenges and emerging opportunities for materials, devices, and integration to enable 5G technologies Includes discussion of technologies such as RF-MEMs, RF FINFETs, and transistors based on current and emerging materials (InP, GaN, etc.) Focuses on mm-wave frequencies up to the terahertz regime
