Sixteen-year-old Nathan Shepherd has a great life traveling where the careers of his father, an investigator, and mother, a renowned violinist, take him ... until his parents are found murdered. Left with only a mirror and notes from his father's last case, Nathan goes into hiding at the remote country home of Tony, his father's college buddy, and Tony's teenage daughter, Kelly. The mysterious mirror must be a clue to what happened to his parents, and when images appear in it---people and things that don't exist---Nathan and Kelly painstakingly gather evidence. But the killers want the mirror too, and danger threatens the teens at every turn. As it becomes evident that Nathan's father had stumbled upon dark forces at work in the world, several questions arise. Could it be that the mirror is a portal to a parallel world? Could this technology be used for evil purposes? And could his parents still be alive, trapped in another dimension? Nathan and Kelly struggle to solve the mystery before they too become victims. This chilling, hair-raising adventure is jam-packed with action in a fantastical world where nothing is as it seems, and even mirrors tell lies.

Reflections Behind the Retina is an account of actual events during the civil war in El Salvador. A series of short stories records the political restrictions and rules of engagement placed on the U.S. military, as well as the dangers faced from the Salvadoran left and right political camps. The official denial by the United States government of the combat role and deaths of U.S. military personnel is exposed throughout the text. A brief Salvadoran military history prepares the reader for what follows. Except for national leaders, the names of the characters in the text have been changed.

What does it mean to be disabled? What gives people the courage to live with long-term disability or incapacity? Can any of us claim to be fully ‘abled’? And what is it that hurts most about being disabled? Is it the physical difficulties, or is it the isolation and stigma that often accompany them? These are real questions. In search of answers, Beyond the Bougainvillea takes readers through the curtain of flowers that covers the front of the Rehabilitation Institute of the Christian Medical College, Vellore, in South India. There they are introduced to a community of patients and staff, therapists, researchers and relatives whose lives have been changed by the experience of disability and the challenges of rehabilitation. This encounter is not for the faint-hearted. The experience of disability speaks to everyone seeking answers to the big questions that face all of us in the end: such as, what does it mean to be human? And how can we best accompany one another on the journey of life?

This book is the collection of most of the written versions of the Courses given at the Winter School "Beyond Quasicrystals" in Les Houches (March 7-18, 1994). The School gathered lecturers and participants from all over the world and was prepared in the spirit of a general effort to promote theoretical and experimental interdisciplinary communication between mathematicians, theoretical and experimental physicists on the topic of the nature of geometric order in solids beyond standard periodicity and quasi periodicity. The overall structure of the book reflects the wish of the editors to pose this fundamental question of geometric order in solids from both the experimental and theoretical point of view. The first part is devoted more specifically to quasicrystals. These materials were the common starting point of most of the audience and present a first concrete example of a non-trivial geometric order. We chose to focus on a few fundamental aspects of quasicrystals related to hidden symmetries in solids which are not easily found in standard textbooks on the topic, not to reach an exhaustive survey which is already available elsewhere.

An eye-opening biography of one of the most influential psychiatrists of the modern age, drawing from his lectures, conversations, and own writings. "An important, firsthand document for readers who wish to understand this seminal writer and thinker." —Booklist In the spring of 1957, when he was eighty-one years old, Carl Gustav Jung undertook the telling of his life story. Memories, Dreams, Reflections is that book, composed of conversations with his colleague and friend Aniela Jaffé, as well as chapters written in his own hand, and other materials. Jung continued to work on the final stages of the manuscript until shortly before his death on June 6, 1961, making this a uniquely comprehensive reflection on a remarkable life. Fully corrected, this edition also includes Jung's VII Sermones ad Mortuos.
