This book was intended for group study of the Bible and also for Bible study teachers. It was originally commissioned by the New York Sunday School Association and written to become part of the training material used in the two-year course for Bible Study teachers.

Written by educators from five continents, this book offers fresh perspectives on teaching the old Testament today, and addresses problems of Curruculum, context, and communication.

BACKGOUND MATERIAL FOR TEACHERS, Book One, surveys the first seventeen Old Testament books for Bible teachers of youth and adults. Teachers must build a firm foundation for studying/teaching the Old Testament by answering ten questions: What is the Old Testament? Who wrote the Old Testament? Where, When, Why and How was the Old Testament written? What are three major features of the Old Testament: Revelation, Inspiration and Preservation? How should we study the Word of God? Why should you memorize the Word of God? When should one read the Word of God? Teachers must also build a personal knowledge through surveying the Old Testament utilizing four areas of study: INTRODUCTORY MATERIAL for the first two sections of the Old Testament; BACKGROUND INFORMATION about the author and book; "TEACHER'S STUDY GUIDE" for each of the 17 books; PRESENTATION MATERIAL for teachers [a teaching survey presented by a Scripture verse or passage]. Following high school, a Bachelor of Science degree was received from Piedmont College, Demorest, GA plus a Georgia Teacher's Professional Certificate. Then came the Army Security Agency and three years later came employment with the National Security Agency, Washington, DC. Meeting Edith Campen from North Carolina led to marriage, February 1, 1957. A year after marriage, God called me to the ministry. Graduating from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Ft. Worth, TX with a Bachelor of Divinity (updated to Masters of Divinity) and Masters in Religious Education (updated to Masters of Arts), God directed me to serve Him. For some 50 years, it was a pleasure to serve God and people in churches and classrooms as Minister of Youth, Minister of Education, Minister of Education/Administration, and Minister of Pastoral Care. The Old Testament as Literature This book has been prepared at the request of the New York State Sunday School Association, through its Normal Committee. The desire was expressed for a teacher-training course to include two years in the Bible: one year upon subjects contained in the Old Testament, taking the historical point of view, and presenting with the history the lands and the Israelite people, their institutions of worship; and a second year upon the New Testament, following the same plan. Those who have studied "Revised Normal Lessons" and "Studies in Old Testament History" will find most of these "Outline Studies" familiar; for it has not been my purpose, as it was not the desire of the committee, to furnish a series of new lessons, but to have the subjects of Old Testament study brought together in one volume. Each subject, however, has been studied anew, and the results of recent knowledge, especially in the chronology, have been incorporated in this revision. At the request of the committee new lessons on "The Old Testament as Literature" and "How We Got Our Bible" have been added. It is my earnest desire that through these studies the Bible may be better understood and more thoroughly taught by the Sunday school teachers of our land. Jesse L. Hurlbut. As part of their teaching resource package TNT have designed this material for 2 - 3 year olds. The book can be used in conjunction with On The Way and gives sound teaching to very young children. Teachers are encouraged to read their Bibles in order to prepare the lessons. The lessons are undated, short and systematic, based on characters and stories from the bible. Each lesson includes a reproducible activity for the children to complete. There is also help for the teacher with a complete lesson plan, prayer and visual aids for every lesson. The Old Testament book has 28 weeks of teaching, including Creation, Abraham, Moses, Gideon, Hannah, Samuel, David, Solomon, Elijah, Elisha, Daniel, Jonah, The Plagues of Egypt, and The Passover.
