This new volume of the Biopsy Interpretation Series is a practical, superbly illustrated reference on the primary non-lymphoid neoplasms of the skin. The book offers guidelines on how and when to biopsy the skin and then discusses benign melanocytic proliferations, precursor lesions to melanoma, and melanomas. Also included are discussions of basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and its precursors, benign and malignant adnexal neoplasms, and soft tissue neoplasms of the skin and superficial subcutis. A major highlight of the book is the extensive discussion of differential diagnostic considerations and their separation from the main diagnostic entities under consideration. The book features nearly 300 full-color images. A companion Website will provide 400 additional figures, plus a test bank that is ideal for board exam preparation.

Gastrointestinal mucosal biopsies are an active part of the pathologist’s day and have increased in the past few years as endoscopic screening has become more commonplace. This new full-color Second Edition of Biopsy Interpretation of the Gastrointestinal Tract Mucosa has been expanded into two concise, comprehensive volumes to offer more complete coverage of both non-neoplastic and neoplastic entities. Like the other books in the Biopsy Interpretation Series, these volumes are practical references for pathologists to use when making diagnostic decisions based on biopsy specimens. The Second Edition of Biopsy Interpretation: The Frozen Section, a volume in the Biopsy Interpretation Series, addresses the frozen section, which is one of several intraoperative consultative options. It illustrates the practical use of the frozen section in the management of clinical problems, especially tumors. The demands of patient care require knowledge of the assets and limitations of the frozen section, including the practical techniques of its execution, interpretation, and the communication of its results. Although the frozen section is the focus, the central idea behind this book is intraoperative consultation and patient management. This edition features updates to the organ system based chapters as well as a revised chapter on pediatric pathology. Two new chapters on hematopathology and a review of published literature have also been added. The goal of this book is to not only provide updated information on the practice of frozen section, but also to help explain the role the general surgical pathologist can play in the treatment of patients. Features: Histologic illustrations are actual frozen sections, with artifacts Updated and expanded text Emphasis is placed on the morphologic expertise of the surgical pathologist in standard hematoxylin and eosin sections and imprints

Preface to the Second Edition Since publication of the first edition, continuing developments in histopathology have motivated the inclusion of four new chapters: cytology, immunohistology, quality control and assessment, and the autopsy. The increasing use of cytology in clinical practice and advances in techniques and diagnostic interpretation justify the devotion of more space than formerly to this important topic. Immunohistology now merits a separate chapter because it has a status beyond that of being just another "special stain" and there are certain aspects of technique and interpretation that are peculiar to it. Quality control and assessment in histopathology are very topical and important now that greater attention is being paid to cost effectiveness and the auditing of many aspects of clinical practice. The autopsy is an integral part of the professional life of a histopathologist and, though it lacks the immediate clinical impact of the biopsy diagnosis, it nevertheless constitutes an important activity in all hospitals; without detailing dissection techniques I have provided some information and guidance about the autopsy which I believe will be useful to trainees and of interest to others. The remainder of the book has been thoroughly revised and updated, and illustrations and tables added where experience has shown that the text is insufficient. Sheffield, October 1986 J. C. E. Underwood Preface to the First Edition This book is primarily addressed to the needs of the trainee histopathologist.
