"Birds, Beasts and Flowers" is a collection of poetry by the English author D. H. Lawrence, first published in 1923. The poems in the collection include some of Lawrence's finest reflections on the "otherness" of the non-human world. The recollections on the topic were inspired by Lawrence's stay in San Gervasio near Florence in September 1920. The author managed to transfer the atmosphere of that place and time masterfully.

This Black Sparrow edition re-sets the text in the format of the first edition (New York: Thomas Seltzer, 1923) and restores several "indecent" lines suppressed by the original publisher. Lawrence (1885-1930) was an English writer and poet whose work explores issues such as sexuality, emotional health, vitality, spontaneity and instinct, whilst reflecting upon the dehumanising effects of modernity and industrialisation. His opinions earned him many enemies and he endured official persecution, censorship and misrepresentation of his creative work throughout the second half of his life, much of which he spent in voluntary exile. Although best known for his novels, Lawrence wrote over 800 poems and this collection first published in 1923 contains some of his finest reflections on the "otherness" of the non-human world. He started the poems in this collection during a stay in San Gervasio near Florence in 1920 and continued working on individual poems in Taormina (Sicily), Ceylon and Australia before completing the book in February 1923 whilst staying in New Mexico.
