It is the year 1969 in the town of Plattsmouth, Nebraska. A mysterious mammoth dog suddenly shows up out of nowhere. Why does he become so quickly accepted into the Bozell household? Many weird events begin to occur to both Bo and his spaced-out neighbor, Randy. Just when things seem like they couldn’t get any stranger, the dog suddenly disappears. Bo’s grief is compounded by the fact that his older brother is now missing in Vietnam. Meanwhile, Matt Duncan continues to hatch his plans to exact revenge on Bo simply because Bo embarrassed him in a high school wrestling match.

The aim of this work is to initiate a systematic study of those properties of Banach space complexes that are stable under certain perturbations. A Banach space complex is essentially an object of the form 1 op-l oP +1 ... --+ XP- --+ XP --+ XP --+ ... , where p runs a finite or infiniteinterval ofintegers, XP are Banach spaces, and oP : Xp ..... Xp+1 are continuous linear operators such that OPOp-1 = 0 for all indices p. In particular, every continuous linear operator S : X ..... Y, where X, Yare Banach spaces, may be regarded as a complex: O ..... X ~ Y ..... O. The already existing Fredholm theory for linear operators suggested the possibility to extend its concepts and methods to the study of Banach space complexes. The basic stability properties valid for (semi-) Fredholm operators have their counterparts in the more general context of Banach space complexes. We have in mind especially the stability of the index (i.e., the extended Euler characteristic) under small or compact perturbations, but other related stability results can also be successfully extended. Banach (or Hilbert) space complexes have penetrated the functional analysis from at least two apparently disjoint directions. A first direction is related to the multivariable spectral theory in the sense of J. L.

This volume contains papers on semi-linear and quasi-linear elliptic equations from the workshop on Nonlinear Elliptic Partial Differential Equations, in honor of Jean-Pierre Gossez's 65th birthday, held September 2-4, 2009 at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium. The workshop reflected Gossez's contributions in nonlinear elliptic PDEs and provided an opening to new directions in this very active research area. Presentations covered recent progress in Gossez's favorite topics, namely various problems related to the $p$-Laplacian operator, the antimaximum principle, the Fucik Spectrum, and other related subjects. This volume will be of principle interest to researchers in nonlinear analysis, especially in partial differential equations of elliptic type.

In economic situations where action entails a fixed cost, inaction is the norm. Action is taken infrequently, and adjustments are large when they occur. Interest in economic models that exhibit ''lumpy'' behavior of this kind has exploded in recent years, spurred by growing evidence that it is typical in many important economic decisions, including price setting, investment, hiring, durable goods purchases, and portfolio management. In The Economics of Inaction, leading economist Nancy Stokey shows how the tools of stochastic control can be applied to dynamic problems of decision making under uncertainty when fixed costs are present. Stokey provides a self-contained, rigorous, and clear treatment of two types of models, impulse and instantaneous control. She presents the relevant results about Brownian motion and other diffusion processes, develops methods for analyzing each type of problem, and discusses applications to price setting, investment, and durable goods purchases. This authoritative book will be essential reading for graduate students and researchers in macroeconomics.
