“A cross between The Hot Zone and ’Salem’s Lot.” —Entertainment Weekly “I cannot wait to see where Del Toro and Hogan take us next.” —James Rollins, New York Times bestselling author of Bloodline The wait is over! Guillermo del Toro, one of Hollywood’s most popular and imaginative storytellers (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy) and Hammett Award-winning thriller writer Chuck Hogan (Prince of Thieves) return with The Fall—the second blood-chilling volume in their critically acclaimed, New York Times bestselling Strain Trilogy. The Fall picks up where The Strain left off—with a vampiric infection spreading like wildfire across America as a small band of heroes struggles to save the dwindling human race from the vampire plague. Horror fiction and dark fantasy fans will be swept up in this epic story that bestselling author Nelson DeMille describes as “Bram Stoker meets Stephen King meets Michael Crichton.”

Stress, Strain, and Structural Dynamics: An Interactive Handbook of Formulas, Solutions, and MATLAB Toolboxes, Second Edition is the definitive reference to statics and dynamics of solids and structures, including mechanics of materials, structural mechanics, elasticity, rigid-body dynamics, vibrations, structural dynamics, and structural controls. The book integrates the development of fundamental theories, formulas, and mathematical models with user-friendly interactive computer programs that are written in MATLAB. This unique merger of technical reference and interactive computing provides instant solutions to a variety of engineering problems, and in-depth exploration of the physics of deformation, stress and motion by analysis, simulation, graphics, and animation. Combines knowledge of solid mechanics with relevant mathematical physics, offering viable solution schemes Covers new topics such as static analysis of space trusses and frames, vibration analysis of plane trusses and frames, transfer function formulation of vibrating systems, and more Empowers readers to better integrate and understand the physical principles of classical mechanics, the applied mathematics of solid mechanics, and computer methods Includes a companion website that features MATLAB exercises for solving a wide range of complex engineering analytical problems using closed-solution methods to test against numerical and other open-ended methods

Boorman’s Pathology of the Rat: Reference and Atlas, Second Edition, continues its history as the most comprehensive pathology reference on rat strains for researchers across science and medicine using rat models in the laboratory. It offers readers an added emphasis on the Sprague-Dawley and Wistar rat strains that is consistent with current research across academia, government, and industry. In addition, the book provides standard diagnostic criteria, basic content on histology, histological changes that result from drug toxicity and neoplasm, pathology terminology, and four-color photographs from the NTP archive and database. With updated references and photographs, as well as coverage of all rat strains, this book is not only the standard in the field, but also an invaluable resource for toxicologists, biologists, and other scientists engaged in regulatory toxicology who must make the transition from pathology results to the promulgation of meaningful regulations. Contains full, four color photographs from the NTP archive and database and coverage of all rat strains Provides an organ-by-organ and system-by-system approach that presents standard diagnostic criteria and basic content on histology and histological changes Includes comprehensive and detailed background incidence data Presents detailed descriptive content regarding changes in rat models during research

This book is intended as a textbook providing a deliberately simple introduction to finite element methods in a way that should be readily understandable to engineers, both students and practising professionals. Only the very simplest elements are considered, mainly two dimensional three-noded “constant strain triangles”, with simple linear variation of the relevant variables. Chapters of the book deal with structural problems (beams), classification of a broad range of engineering into harmonic and biharmonic types, finite element analysis of harmonic problems, and finite element analysis of biharmonic problems (plane stress and plane strain). Full FORTRAN programs are listed and explained in detail, and a range of practical problems solved in the text. Despite being somewhat unfashionable for general programming purposes, the FORTRAN language remains very widely used in engineering. The programs listed, which were originally developed for use on mainframe computers, have been thoroughly updated for use on desktops and laptops. Unlike the first edition, the new edition has problems (with solutions) at the end of each chapter. Electronic copies of all the computer programs displayed in the book can be downloaded at: http://www.worldscientific.com/doi/suppl/10.1142/p847/suppl_file/p847_program.zip.
