This book tackles some of the deepest problems in Berkeley's philosophy by providing a fresh interpretation of Berkeley's core ontological doctrines and their relationship to his views about self-consciousness. Berkeley, the author argues, is led to adopt a new model of self-consciousness because he rejects the basic metaphysics of many of his predecessors. This new model of self-consciousness provides the foundation for Berkeley's own ontological framework. Bettcher's interpretation provides answers to long-standing questions about Berkeley's traditionally derided views about mind, offers an elegant treatment of Berkeley's core metaphysical views more generally, and illuminates Berkeley's innovative attempt to address the important philosophical and theological issues of his day. Moreover, Bettcher shows the importance of Berkeley's philosophy of spirit to the perplexing thesis that the subject of experience is somehow mysteriously elusive. She argues that Berkeley can be seen as a transitional figure with respect to the older philosophical concept of 'subject' (as a metaphysical supporter of properties) and the more modern philosophical concept of 'subject (as opposed to 'object'). She provides a re-reading of Hume's famous claim that when he turned reflection upon himself, he could perceive only perceptions and sheds new light on the notion of a 'subject of experience'. The book will be of substantial interest both to Berkeley scholars and to philosophers concerned with contemporary discussions of self-consciousness.

What language is most appropriate for worship? Should it lean toward the colloquial, perhaps targeting those attending a worship service for the first time? Or should it be a language with deeper roots, the language of a community that, for the most part, already loves the God to whom worship is offered? Ronald Byars argues that the communal speech that truly honors God is, in fact, biblical language, which encompasses a vast range of forms -- poetry and prose, song and proverb, parable and narrative. Byars explains how biblical language becomes liturgical language that pushes us beyond what we already think we know, requiring us to think anew about death and resurrection, beginnings and endings, and the life of faith. What Language Shall I Borrow? is an instructive, eloquent reminder not to retreat from biblical language and images but to fully embrace them in our worship today.

Elizabeth Ann Dively Lauro discusses the theologian Origen’s employment of three distinct senses of scriptural meaning within his exegetical theory and practice: somatic (bodily, factually historical), psychic (pertaining to the soul, a figurative call to shun vice and grow in virtue), and pneumatic (spiritual, revealing God’s plan of salvation through Christ’s Incarnation). Lauro first establishes that a correct understanding of the mechanics of Origen’s exegesis is vital to an informed reading of his works, then cites Origen’s theoretical foundations for each sense. She ultimately demonstrates how the relationship between the two “higher senses” (psychic and pneumatic) is central to Origen’s exegetical efforts and facilitates his audience’s spiritual transformation.

"[Wren's] work is fresh, daring, and suggestive, and at the same time informed, critical, and disciplined. . . . Wren has combined an exceedingly thoughtful theoretical presentation of the linguistic problem and a step-by-step practical walk-through of the issues. . . . It takes a poet, not a clerk, to voice what has been disclosed by God. Wren is such a poet; he invites us to fresh evangelical cadences that will themselves liberate." Theology Today "[Wren] makes an inventive effort to help cure the disease that is devastating the worship scene. He himself writes extraordinary hymn texts that are 'beyond patriarchy,' and he hangs them in 'galleries' in his book. . . . He gives us a readable, convincing book centered on the language question but profoundly theological in its implications." National Catholic Reporter "A book of tremendous value to liturgists, theologians, members of the newly forming men's liberation movement, clergy and policymakers, and anyone interested in the issue of inclusive God-language, including those who are curious about why it matters in the first place. . . . Part of the value of What Language Shall I Borrow? is Wren's graceful, imaginative presentation of his facts. Although there is ample cognitive input, it is interspersed with moving hymn texts, practical workshop ideas and fascinating narratives." The Presbyterian Outlook

We are seeing across our nation and around the world an increasing struggle for true believers to experience and express the liberty of their faith in God. Governments are rapidly removing symbols of Christianity, standards of Righteousness and Spiritual Freedoms. The days are truly evil. Therefore, Pastor Graham has taken an old story about a deck of cards used as a Biblical Study Guide to encourage the learning of Biblical truths. He illustrates the cards of either suit within the deck with an inspirational account of Scripture worthy of learning and living. As the moral code of life diminishes before us and the rise of materialism and secular humanism takes control, Pastor Graham feels it is essential that individuals acquire the knowledge of Gods Word and apply it in the secret confidences of their hearts and in the steps they take each day. Just as the Sergeant in the story requested, May I borrow that deck of cards; let us read this book and request of God the knowledge of living a changed and committed life regardless where we may be or what we may be facing.
