Mastering Discourse gathers and elaborates more than a decade of thought on the problems of the intellectual in contemporary society, by one of the most distinguished critics writing on these issues today. From Derrida and Foucault to Kristeva and Irigaray, Paul A. Bové looks at the practices of literary and cultural theory, and discusses the way theorists have produced their institutional positions and politics. Examining some of the major theories developed out of and in relation to the problems of discourse, Bové analyzes the limited successes and failures of these efforts. Mastering Discourses offers an account of why "theory" fails to deal adequately with the politics of discursive cultures and warns that unless critics take much more seriously their own disciplinary inscriptions they will always reproduce structures of power and knowledge that they claim to oppose. Moreover, Bové argues, they will not fulfill the main role of the post-enlightenment intellectual, namely: to respond effectively to the present, through new theoretical and historical formulations that address the changing world of transnational capitalism and its neoliberal ideologies.

The Pacific, long a source of fantasies for EuroAmerican consumption and a testing ground for the development of EuroAmerican production, is often misrepresented by the West as one-dimensional, culturally monolithic. Although the Asia/Pacific region occupies a prominent place in geopolitical thinking, little is available to readers outside the region concerning the resistant communities and cultures of Pacific and Asian peoples. Asia/Pacific as Space of Cultural Production fills that gap by documenting the efforts of diverse indigenous cultures to claim and reimagine Asia/Pacific as a space for their own cultural production. From New Zealand to Japan, Taiwan to Hawaii, this innovative volume presents essays, poems, and memoirs by prominent Asia/Pacific writers that resist appropriation by transnational capitalism through the articulation of autonomous local identities and counter-histories of place and community. In addition, cultural critics spanning several locations and disciplines deconstruct representations--particularly those on film and in novels--that perpetuate Asia/Pacific as a realm of EuroAmerican fantasy. This collection, a much expanded edition of boundary 2, offers a new perception of the Asia/Pacific region by presenting the Pacific not as a paradise or vast emptiness, but as a place where living, struggling peoples have constructed contemporary identities out of a long history of hegemony and resistance. Asia/Pacific as Space of Cultural Production will prove stimulating to readers with an interest in the Asia/Pacific region, and to scholars in the fields of Asian, American, Pacific, postcolonial, and cultural studies. Boundary Value Problems on Time Scales, Volume II is devoted to the qualitative theory of boundary value problems on time scales. Summarizing the most recent contributions in this area, it addresses a wide audience of specialists such as mathematicians, physicists, engineers and biologists. It can be used as a textbook at the graduate level and as a reference book for several disciplines. The text contains two volumes, both published by Chapman & Hall/CRC Press. Volume I presents boundary value problems for first- and second-order dynamic equations on time scales. Volume II investigates boundary value problems for three, four, and higher-order dynamic equations on time scales. Many results to differential equations carry over easily to corresponding results for difference equations, while other results seem to be totally different in nature. Because of these reasons, the theory of dynamic equations is an active area of research. The time-scale calculus can be applied to any field in which dynamic processes are described by discrete or continuous time models. The calculus of time scales has various applications involving noncontinuous domains such as certain bug populations, phytoremediation of metals, wound healing, maximization problems in economics, and traffic problems. Boundary value problems on time scales have been extensively investigated in simulating processes and the phenomena subject to short-time perturbations during their evolution. The material in this book is presented in highly readable, mathematically solid format. Many practical problems are illustrated displaying a wide variety of solution techniques. AUTHORS Svetlin G. Georgiev is a mathematician who has worked in various areas of the study. He currently focuses on harmonic analysis, functional analysis, partial differential equations, ordinary differential equations, Clifford and quaternion analysis, integral equations, and dynamic calculus on time scales. Khaled Zennir earned his PhD in mathematics in 2013 from Sidi Bel Abbès University, Algeria. In 2015, he received his highest diploma in Habilitation in mathematics from Constantine University, Algeria. He is currently assistant professor at Qassim University in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. His research interests lie in the subjects of nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations: global existence, blowup, and long-time behavior.
