While best known for literature's greatest, most popular, and most famous vampire novel, Dracula, Bram Stoker also wrote superlative short stories. Indeed, he was a genius at creating horror within the confines of a short tale. Now readers can sample Stoker's mastery in this treasury of fourteen spine-tingling stories. Not all the selections deal with the ghostly and supernatural, but they are always bizarre, and some—like "The Squaw" and "The Burial of the Rats"—are equal to Poe at his best. In addition to these two masterly tales, the collection includes "The Crystal Cup," "The Chain of Destiny," "The Castle of the King," "The Dualists" (probably Stoker's most horrifying story), "The Judge's House," "The Secret of the Growing Gold," "A Dream of Red Hands," "Crooken Sands," "Dracula's Guest," and three more. Lovers of occult and supernatural fiction will delight in this inexpensive collection of ghost and horror stories, called by Stephen King "absolutely champion short stories."

2021 Foreword INDIES Finalist A girl of the desert and a jinni born long ago by the sea, both enslaved to the Salt King—but with this capricious magic, only one can be set free. As a daughter of the Salt King, Emel ought to be among the most powerful women in the desert. Instead, she and her sisters have less freedom than even her father's slaves ... for the Salt King uses his own daughters to seduce visiting noblemen into becoming powerful allies by marriage. Escape from her father’s court seems impossible, and Emel dreams of a life where she can choose her fate. When members of a secret rebellion attack, Emel stumbles upon an alluring escape route: her father’s best-kept secret—a wish-granting jinni, Saalim. But in the land of the Salt King, wishes are never what they seem. Saalim’s magic is volatile. Emel could lose everything with a wish for her freedom as the rebellion intensifies around her. She soon finds herself playing a dangerous game that pits dreams against responsibility and love against the promise of freedom. As she finds herself drawn to the jinni for more than his magic, captivated by both him and the world he shows her outside her desert village, she has to decide if freedom is worth the loss of her family, her home and Saalim, the only man she’s ever loved.

Dracula's Guest and Other Strange Stories, (1914) brought together the best horror stories of Bram Stoker. The collection was published after his death and included three stories previously unpublished: The Gypsy Prophecy, in which a newly married couple visits a gypsy camp with the intention of unmasking his supposed fortune-tellers, The Return of Abel Behenna, which tells us the story of the beautiful Sarah and her peculiar way of choosing between her two suitors, and Dracula's Guest, a text originally written as the first chapter of "Dracula" (1897) and later suppressed by Stoker due to the excessive length of the work. The reader will also find in this volume stories such as The House of the Judge (1891), The Dream of the Red Hands (1894) or the terrifying Burial of the Rats (1878). This volume is completed by four stories collected for the first time by Peter Haining (1980-91): The chain of destiny (1875), The dualists (1887), The seer (1910) and The nuptials of death (1912). It is, therefore, a collection of strange and macabre stories, showing the best facets of Bram Stoker's narrative art, with his singular mastery of weaving emotional and dramatic elements in a growing atmosphere of terror.
