Bridging Archaeological And Information Technology Cultures For Community Accessibility

Etruscan architecture underwent various changes between the later Iron Age and the Archaic period. This book reconsiders these changes by focusing on the building materials and techniques used in the construction of domestic structures.

The Etruscans can be shown to have made significant, and in some cases perhaps the first, technical advances in the central and northern Mediterranean. To the Etruscan people we can attribute such developments as the tie-beam truss in large wooden structures, surveying and engineering drainage and water tunnels, the development of the foresail for fast long-distance sailing vessels, fine techniques of metal production and other pyrotechnology, post-mortem C-sections in medicine, and more. In art, many technical and iconographic developments, although they certainly happened first in Greece or the Near East, are first seen in extant Etruscan works, preserved in the lavish tombs and goods of Etruscan aristocrats. These include early portraiture, the first full-length painted portrait, the first perspective view of a human figure in monumental art, specialized techniques of bronze-casting, and reduction-fired pottery (the bucchero phenomenon). Etruscan contacts, through trade, treaty and intermarriage, linked their culture with Sardinia, Corsica and Sicily, with the Italic tribes of the peninsula, and with the Near Eastern kingdoms, Greece and the Greek colonial world, Iberia, Gaul and the Punic network of North Africa, and influenced the cultures of northern Europe. In the past fifteen years striking advances have been made in scholarship and research techniques for Etruscan Studies. Archaeological and scientific discoveries have changed our picture of the Etruscans and furnished us with new, specialized information. Thanks to the work of dozens of international scholars, it is now possible to discuss topics of interest that could never before be researched, such as Etruscan mining and metallurgy, textile production, foods and agriculture. In this volume, over 60 experts provide insights into all these aspects of Etruscan culture, and more, with many contributions available in English for the first time to allow the reader access to research that may not otherwise be available to them. Lavishly illustrated, The Etruscan World brings to life the culture and material past of the Etruscans and highlights key points of development in research, making it essential reading for researchers, academics and students of this fascinating civilization.

Methodologies, Applications and Integrated Solutions) affrontano il tema delle ricerche sulle città antiche e il loro territorio basate sull'applicazione di metodologie innovative. Particolare attenzione è stata data ai risultati del progetto sulla città etrusca di Marzabotto, l'antica Kainua, e ai progetti che interessano i principali centri etruschi dell'Italia antica, a cui si sono dedicate due sezioni specifiche.

Nel volume 31.2 sono pubblicati gli Atti di due Convegni internazionali. Il primo, “Milano internazionale: la fragilità territoriale dei contesti archeologici” (Milano, 13 marzo 2019), promosso dal Dipartimento di Beni Culturali e Ambientali dell’Università degli Studi di Milano e dal Dipartimento di Architettura e Studi Urbani del Politecnico di Milano, è a cura di G. Bagnasco Gianni, S. Bortolotto, A. Garzulino e M. Marzullo. Il secondo, “Logic and computing. The underlying basis of digital archaeology”, è una sessione speciale dell’IMEKO TC-4 International Conference on Metrology for Archaeology and Cultural Heritage (MetroArchaeo, Firenze, 4-6 dicembre 2019), a cura di A. Caravale e P. Moscati. Gli Atti raccolgono rispettivamente 9 e 15 contributi, introdotti dai curatori che illustrano scopi e risultati delle ricerche presentate, in cui l’uso delle tecnologie informatiche è determinante per l’analisi, l’interpretazione e la diffusione e valorizzazione dei dati. La prospettiva diacronica della sessione dedicata al calcolo e alla logica nella storia dell’informatica archeologica consente di collegare, attraverso un ponte teorico-metodologico, le prime esperienze di informatizzazione dei dati archeologici con le tendenze più recenti dell’archeologia digitale.

This book constitutes the revised selected papers from the First International Workshop on Multimedia for Cultural Heritage, MM4CH 2011, held in Modena, Italy, on May 3, 2011. The 8 full papers and 9 poster papers included in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 25 submissions. In addition, the book contains a paper resuming the outcome of the discussion session. The workshop aimed on creating a profitable informal working day to discuss hot topics in multimedia, with special application to cultural heritage. The papers of the oral session are divided in topical sections named interaction and analysis and management.

Cultural heritage communities of interest have increasingly expanded from cultural heritage professionals to volunteers, special interest groups and independent citizen-led initiative groups. Digital technology has also increasingly impacted cultural heritage by affording novel experiences of it – it features in a number of activities for all the aforementioned groups, as well as acting as support for visitors to cultural heritage centres. With different degrees of formality and training, these communities are increasingly defining and taking ownership of what is of value to them, thus reconfiguring the care, communication, interpretation and validation of heritage. Digital technology has played a crucial role in this transformative process. In a fully international context, cultural heritage practitioners, community champions and academics from different fields of study have contributed to this book. Each chapter brings to the fore the multiple relationships between heritage, communities and technologies as a focus of study and reflection in an inclusive way. Contributions touch upon present and future opportunities for technology, as well as participatory design processes with different stakeholders. This book brings together ideas from different disciplines, cultures, methods and goals, to inspire scholars and practitioners involved in community heritage projects.

This two-volume set of LNCS 12188 and 12189 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Universal Access in Human-Computer Interaction, UAHCI 2020, held as part of the 22nd International Conference, HCI International 2020, which took place in Copenhagen, Denmark, in July 2020. The conference was held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The total of 1439 papers and 238 posters have been accepted for publication in the HCII 2020 proceedings from a total of 6326 submissions.
