Excerpt from Business-a Profession It is true that at the present time the lawyer does not hold that position With the people which he held fifty years ago; but the reason is in my opinion not lack of opportunity. It is because, instead of holding a position of independence between the wealthy and the people, prepared to curb the excesses of either, the able lawyers have to a great extent allowed them selves to become an adjunct of the great corporations, and have neglected their obligation to use their powers for the protection of the people. If we are to solve the important economic, social and industrial ques tions Which have become political questions also, it seems to me clear that the attitude of the lawyer in this respect must be materially changed. The great opportunity of the American Bar is and will be to stand again as it did in the past, ready to protect also the interests of the people. Of this work in the people's service, his story is a unique example. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Law Business or Profession? Columbia is taking steps to keep out of the legal profession men whose character and ethics are inconsistent with the standards of the profession, according to Dean Harlan F. Stone or the law school, who said yesterday that in the five years he has been at the head of the law faculty at least two students who had satisfactorily completed courses had been denied degrees and half a dozen more had been advised to leave the school. Dean Stone said that in many cases it was practicable to steer a prospective lawyer whose ethics did not appear to be of the best away from the profession before he had received his legal training. "In such a case," said the dean, "the student is called into the office and is told that Columbia would be much better off without him. He is advised too that he should not go into the law and in order that this may have effect we notify the Bar Association and the character committee in New York State and also the bar examiners of every State in the Union." Excerpt from An Entrance Guide to Professions and Business IN including this Guide to the Professions and Business in the commercial series, the Editor and Publishers believe that they will meet the wants and Wishes not only of a large number of young men who are about to enter upon their life's work, but of many parents who are anxious to decide upon a career for their sons. The choice of a career must necessarily depend upon a large variety of circumstances, and the causes that influence a decision must always vary largely in particular cases; but it is thought that much help will be afforded in taking a step so important and vital, by placing before parents and sons the main facts about each of the recognised professions and the chief branches Of business. With this Object in view the present volume has been arranged, and the Author has spared no pains to make the information here given practical, reliable, and up to-date. It will be noticed that the section on professions includes Journalism and Scholastic work, which are Often neglected in similar manuals, while the commercial section covers a larger variety of occupations than is usually described, such as Coachbuilding, the Earthenware Trade, and Railway Clerkships - these being chosen in addition to other occupations as being for various reasons typical in character. It is, perhaps, impossible to deal with all the many and varied phases of commercial life, but the Editor believes that enough information is given in these pages to meet all ordinary requirements. It has not been possible in the space available to give details of all the subjects Of examination in the various professions and the Civil Service, as these vary from time to time but full information is given as to the general kind of work required, and in every case the Author has indicated where further information may be found. Excerpt from The Ethics of a Profession Now, for many years it has been increasingly manifest that the occupations, whether in trade, industry or profession, need guidance for all the people who follow them. It is no longer permis sible to scoff at the idea of ethics in a trade. In many of the most humble vocations there is an ethical spirit among the leaders, if not the rank and file, which might well be emulated by the so - called higher orders of society. In the sphere of industry and merchandising many fine things are being done, and those who would succeed to day are finding it essential to conduct their en terprises in accordance with an enlightened al truism. The old notion that each merchant was a law unto himself, not influencing nor influ enced by the acts of his competitors, has been thrown into the discard. It is known now that what is good for one is good for all and injurious to one injurious to all. So men are banding to gether somewhat after the fashion of the old guilds, and there is a free exchange of ideas and experimental knowledge which is making the business world a better place. Excerpt from Business Employments When a young man faces the world and has to make his choice of a way to earn his living, three roads open before him, broadly speaking. The first is business, with its many lines. The second is that of the indus tries, which include all skilled and unskilled labor in the manufacturing and building trades and in agriculture. The third is that of the professions, such as engineering, teaching, law, medicine, journalism, and the fine arts. This volume deals with the first of these divisions. It discusses the Opportunities for employment in business. But business itself divides into three branches Manu facture, Trade, and Finance. Manufacturing has a busi ness side which is just as important as the actual work of making things. Trade is buying and selling. Store keeping, wholesale and retail, is another name for it. Finance is that branch of business which collects and preserves and distributes the supply of money on which the business world depends. We are most familiar with it in the form of Banking.
