"By Canoe and Dog Train Among The Cree and Salteaux Indians" is a book about the lives of Christian ministers preaching among the Canadian Indians in the area of Ontario. The book tells the story of Reverend Egerton Ryerson Young, who was pastoring a thriving Methodist church in Hamilton, and his wife, Elizabeth. They both went to serve as missionaries among the Cree and Saulteaux Indians at Norway House and in the North-West Territories north of Lake Winnipeg. This book tells of the adventures, blessings, and hardships the family experienced while sharing the gospel with the Indian people of Canada's northland.

My friend, Mr. Egerton R. Young, has asked me to write a few words of preface to his book. Although he needs no words of mine to introduce him to the people "at home" as the Canadians call the Motherland, I very gladly comply with his request. It was on a sunny day in the early part of May, 1887, that I met Mr. Young away at Meaford on the shores of Georgian Bay. We passed the river, -crowded with boys and men snatching with leaded hooks at the mullet that were swarming in shoals from Lake Huron, -along by the wharves to the water's edge, and there on the pebble ridge we sat and talked. A simple, honest, straight-forward Methodist preacher, one felt at home with him at once. I found that he had been a Missionary for many years amongst the Cree and Salteaux Indians away in " the Lone Land." I had but to ask a question here and there and sat entranced; the people, the country, the

The Rev. Edgerton R. Young (1840-1909), for years a missionary to the Indians in the region of Winnipeg Lake and the Red River of the North, presents in the little volume first published in 1890 'By Canoe and Dog-train Among the Cree and Salteaux Indians' some account of the Indians and sledge dogs he has known. Young had claimed that Jack London's "The Call of the Wild (1903)" was taken from Young's book "My Dogs in the Northland ." London later acknowledged using it as a source and claimed to have written a letter to Young thanking him.Young faced the hardships and privations of that little-known northland, traveling several thousands of miles each year, in winter with dog sleds and in the summers in a birch canoe. During these missionary tours by canoe and dog sledge he had ample opportunities for studying the Eskimo and St. Bernard dogs his experiences with which are here incorporated into story form. The many exciting incidents and thrilling adventures of this period of his life have been described in vivid detail of an experience and expert story-teller. He has a charming and at times a thrilling story-telling style. There is room for a book which shall tell us about dogs, harness, and sledges, and the art of transportation in a country without roads or artificial shelter for the traveller.

Excerpt from By Canoe and Dog-Train: Among the Cree and Salteaux Indians I felt that he could do for us a work that needed to be done, and that few could do, in renewing the popular interest in foreign missionary enterprise. I had hoped that the Missionary Society might have utilised him for deputation work, and have sent him through the country on this errand. This hope, however, has not been fulfilled. But not the less service has been rendered by Mr. And Mrs. Young, as they have gone from place to place interesting and thrilling tens of thousands by the records of their great success and of God's blessing amongst the Indians.
