Canada S Performance

Since its inception as an institutionalized discipline in the United States during the 1980s, performance studies has focused on the interdisciplinary analysis of a broad spectrum of cultural behaviours including theatre, dance, folklore, popular entertainments, performance art, protests, cultural rituals, and the performance of self in everyday life. Performance Studies in Canada brings together a diverse group of scholars to explore the national emergence of performance studies as a field in Canada. To date, no systematic attempts has been made to consider how this methodology is being taught, applied, and rethought in Canadian contexts, and Canadian performance studies scholarship remains largely unacknowledged within international discussions about the discipline. This collection fills this gap by identifying multiple origins of performance studies scholarship in the country and highlighting significant works of performance theory and history that are rooted in Canadian culture. Essays illustrate how specific institutional conditions and cultural investments – Indigenous, francophone, multicultural, and more – produce alternative articulations of “performance” and reveal national identity as a performative construct. A state-of-the-art work on the state of the field, Performance Studies in Canada foregrounds national and global performance knowledge to invigorate the discipline around the world.

A companion anthology to Q2Q: Queer Canadian Theatre and Performance, the work contained in this volume provides a snapshot of Canadian contemporary queer performance practices--from solo performance to political allegory to family melodrama to intersectional narratives that combine text, movement, and music.

This paper updates and refines an analysis of the Canada-US Free Trade Agreement's (FTA) impact that appeared in the fall of last year and contains 3 substantive sections. The 1st looks at the role that exports and imports have played in affecting the direction of the Canadian economy since 1988, the year before the FTA was implemented. The 2d section analyzes trends in both exports and imports over the 1989-92 period, by comparing trade between Canada and the U.S. with trade between Canada and all other countries. It also examines the performance of goods ands services liberalized by free trade relative to the performance of other goods and services. The 3d section offers an overall assessment of the effects of the FTA so far and of the policy implications flowing from the analysis.

Interdependent Magic: Disability Performance in Canada is a collection of plays and interviews by, for, and about Disabled theatre artists that invites readers into the magical worlds of Disability arts culture. The book features four plays as well as interviews with artists Justin Manyfingers and Niall McNeill. In Smudge by Alex Bulmer, a woman details her journey toward Blindness, mourning what she loses and discovering what her other senses provide. Access Me by Boys in Chairs Collective is a celebration of sex and Disability, providing an all-access safe space to spin around. Antarctica by Syrus Marcus Ware imagines a world where racialized people have survived multiple catastrophes and must begin terraforming a new colony. And in Deafy by Chris Dodd, a Deaf public speaker takes the audience on an unexpected journey of discovering what it really means to belong.

This study reviews the importance of the manufacturing sector to the Canadian economy. The first part analyzes the sector in seven sections, each of which outlines a different thread related to sectoral performance: the presence of manufacturing industries in the Canadian economy, labour productivity in Canada and in comparison with other countries, employment performance, destinations of manufacturing shipments, production costs, and capital investment by industrial group. The second & final part attempts to explain the similarities & differences found in the performance of individual industries described in part one. It reports on the use of advanced technologies, summarizes connectedness in manufacturing, discusses innovation and human capital issues, and notes major challenges faced by the sector.
