Analytical techniques based on separation processes, such as chromatography and electrophoresis, are finding a growing range of applications in chemical, pharmaceutical and clinical laboratories. This series provides the analyst in these laboratories with well focused books covering individual techniques, so that they can be applied more efficiently and effectively to contemporary analytical problems. Capillary gas chromatography is one of the most powerful separation tools available to analysts working in a wide diversity of disciplines. Capillary Gas Chromatography will give practising analysts a sound theoretical and practical knowledge of the subject, giving a thorough account of the many fascinating and important developments occurring in the field in recent years. The theory is presented with practical applications in mind. Common problems encountered when using this technique, and the means of overcoming them are also presented. Capillary Gas Chromatography will be of great practical use to analytical chemists using the technique, including those in the pharmaceutical, food and beverage, environmental, clinical, and petrochemical industries. It will also be invaluable for graduate students and researchers involved in the need to separate complex mixtures.

Dean Rood A Practical Guide to the Care, Maintenance, and Troubleshooting of Capillary Gas Chromatographic Systems Third, Revised Edition The field of gas chromatography continues the evolutionary process. This is well demonstrated by the continuous series of developments — in columns, equipment, apparatus, techniques, and applications — that have occured since the publication of the first edition of this very successful offering. Problems experienced by users differ from case to case, and these differences sometimes necessitate different approaches to care, maintenance, and trouble-shooting. This book is intended for the average GC user and not for those whose entire life revolves around capillary gas chromatography. The topics covered within these pages are based on the most common problems, questions, and misconceptions about capillary gas chromatography. These topics have been assembled and presented in a unique, practical, and concise format suitable even for the most inexperienced user. The author has not changed his successful approach to the topic in the present third edition. Instead, he has focused on updating and correcting the text of the widely acclaimed second edition.

For my past sins, Leslie Ettre has given me the privilege of writing a few words to preface his excellent little book. It gives me great pleasure to do so, because of the many years of fruitful collabo ration we have had at Perkin-Elmer, because it is refreshing to see a treatise in gas chromatography in which the theoretical treatment has been bared to its essentials, without a mushrooming of formulae which, by means of an ever increasing number of parameters, account for more and more, and explain less and less, and because the author has recognized that the gas chromatographic column is a nearly passive element in its own right which deserves to have a treatise written nearly exclusively about it, just as electrical circuit theory can be discussed without elaborate references to vacuum tubes and meters. I wish this conscientiously written volume the success it deserves. M. J. E. GOLAY VII Preface Gas chromatography is a separation technique used primarily in analytical chemistry. Therefore, it is evident that special emphasis should be placed on that particular part of the apparatus in which the separation takes place. This part is the column, the heart of the gas chromatograph. The goal of researchers in the field of gas chromatography has been-from the beginning-to understand the separation process so that they might design columns with the best possible performance. Such investigation led M. J. E.
