Modern information and communication technologies make it easier for individuals to be involved in their own health and social care. They also facilitate contact between individuals and service providers and deliver more efficient tools for healthcare staff. Artificial Intelligence (AI) promises to bring even more benefits in the future, with more effectiveness and the provision of decision support. This book presents the proceedings of the 33rd Medical Informatics Europe Conference, MIE2023, held in Gothenburg, Sweden, from 22 to 25 May 2023. The theme of MIE2023 was ‘Caring is Sharing – Exploiting Value in Data for Health and Innovation’, stressing the increasing importance of sharing digital-health data and the related challenges. The sharing of health data is developing rapidly, both in Europe and beyond, so the focus of the conference was on the enabling of trustworthy sharing of data to improve health. Topics covered include healthcare, community care, self-care, public health, and the innovation and development of future-proof digital-health solutions, and the almost 300 papers divided into 10 chapters also cover important advances in the sub domains of biomedical informatics: decision support systems, clinical information systems, clinical research informatics, knowledge management and representation, consumer health informatics, natural language processing, public health informatics, privacy, ethical and societal aspects among them. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the pace at which innovative health technologies are being designed, developed, and implemented. This inevitably presents new risks and challenges, not least, how to ensure that these technologies are appropriate for particular environments. In this sense, ‘environments’ may be people in various roles (e.g. patients, users, designers, evaluators) or non-human constructs such as organizations, work practices, guidelines and protocols, buildings, and markets. This book presents papers from CSHI 2023, the latest in the series of biennial conferences on Context Sensitive Health Informatics, held in Sydney, Australia, on 5 and 6 July 2023. The theme of CSHI 2023 was Context Sensitive Health Informatics and the Pandemic Boost, and the book includes 19 papers and 7 poster abstracts covering a variety of topics. These are divided into 5 sections: clinician perceptions and use of health technologies; workforce development in health informatics; aligning workflows and work systems to health technologies; co-design, equitable evaluation, and sustainable implementation of digital health tools; and big data and information management. The book provides an overview of the latest health information systems and of recent research in the area of context and health information technologies, and will be of interest to all those working in the field of health informatics.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is once again in the news, with many major figures urging caution as developments in the technology accelerate. AI impacts all aspects of our lives, but perhaps the discipline of Biomedical Informatics is more affected than most, and is an area where the possible pitfalls of the technology might have particularly serious consequences. This book presents the papers delivered at ICIMTH 2023, the 21st International Conference on Informatics, Management, and Technology in Healthcare, held in Athens, Greece, from 1-3 July 2023. The ICIMTH conferences form a series of scientific events which offers a platform for scientists working in the field of biomedical and health informatics from all continents to gather and exchange research findings and experience. The title of the 2023 conference was Healthcare Transformation with Informatics and Artificial Intelligence, reflecting the importance of AI to healthcare informatics. A total of 252 submissions were received by the Program Committee, of which 149 were accepted as full papers, 13 as short communications, and 14 as poster papers after review. The papers cover a wide range of technologies, and topics include imaging, sensors, biomedical equipment, and management and organizational aspects, as well as legal and social issues. The book provides a timely overview of informatics and technology in healthcare during this time of extremely fast developments, and will be of interest to all those working in the field.

Current ideas about human diversity often highlight the importance of the relational and dynamic nature of interactions across different domains of human function, activities and participation. Universal Design (UD) is defined as design that is usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible and without the need for adaptation or specialization. The term ‘universal’ is intended to embrace human diversity, making it the opposite of the one-size-fits-all approach. The Universal Design conference series was started in 2012 with the aim of promoting UD as a discipline-independent philosophy and approach which can transcend the boundaries between communities of knowledge and communities of practice. The first part of this book is a collection of 6 invited papers arising from some of the informal and semi-formal discussions and debates which took place as part of the UD 2022 conference in Italy. Authors were invited to submit papers presenting real case studies, and asked to discuss not only the opportunities and strengths, but also the challenges encountered when implementing UD in various domains. The second part of the book presents 6 essays by researchers who have worked on different aspects of UD over the years, each written from the perspective of the author’s own research strand. The book will be of interest to all those working in the field of universal design and inclusivity.

Caring about others and the future is part of what makes us human, and it can be argued that improving the lives of people with disabilities improves the lives of all human beings. Most of what we do as a society for people with disabilities also improves life for others, and if we consider a person’s entire life, a disability of some kind will affect almost everybody at some point. This book, Assistive Technology: Shaping a Sustainable and Inclusive World, presents the proceedings of AAATE 2023, the 17th International Conference of the Association for the Advancement of Assistive Technology in Europe, held in Aubervilliers, France, from 30 August to 1 September 2023. For over 30 years, the biennial AAATE conference has focused on research aimed at improving the lives of people with a disability, and has become one of the main platforms for all stakeholders in the field. A total of 123 papers were submitted in the category intended for publication in these conference proceedings, and after a rigorous process involving review by at least three international reviewers, 74 were selected for inclusion here. Topics covered include service delivery of AT; AT for various groups such as older adults, children, and those with cognitive disabilities; mobility; privacy and security issues; and AT to promote inclusion and facilitate participation in education, culture, and work. Providing a comprehensive and current overview, the book will be of interest to researchers, practitioners, manufacturers, decision-makers and providers, users of AT, and anyone else working in the field.

Telemedicine is a term which covers all remotely-provided health services. It removes the obstacle of distance and can equalize access to care by means of technology. Telemedicine assumed increased importance during the time of pandemic restrictions, but despite increased interest, progress has been slowed by factors such as cost, lack of privacy legislation, the reluctance of elderly patients to use ICT, and a lack of qualified actors. It remains, however, one of the best solutions to the problems of different levels of healthcare provision and health outcomes across regions. This book presents the proceedings of STC2023, a Special Topic Conference (STC) organized by the European Federation for Medical Informatics (EFMI), and held from 25 - 27 October 2023 in Turin, Italy. These conferences promote research and development in a specific field of biomedical and health informatics, and the theme of the 2023 STC was Telehealth Ecosystems in Practice. A total of 112 submissions were received for the conference. Of these, the number of papers selected after a thorough review process was 51 full papers (acceptance 59%) and 26 posters, all of which are included in these proceedings. Topics covered include homecare and telemonitoring; televisits; teleradiology; telerehabilitation; data integration and standards; embedded decision support systems; sensors, devices and patient-reported outcomes; healthbots and conversational agents; and AI applications to telehealth. Covering a wide range of topics and methods in telemedicine and biomedical informatics, the book will be of interest to all those involved in the planning and provision of healthcare.
